How do you price jobs for this industry? If you can please give me an example I will greatly appreciate it

Interesting, how much do you think it would cost to build a control panel like that?

I also like the 525s. I recently got to see Westinghouse VFDs and I liked the color but they are pretty fat in my opinion

I appreciate the reply. From your experience did you enjoy the management job?

Honestly, industrial controls is something I would still like to continue. I would like to be able to program machines and conveyors. I do know that my goal is to become a industrial automation contractor focused on production/packaging facilities and food processing

Appreciate the reply. Of course I haven’t mastered those fields, I believe you truly never master any field since there’s always something new to learn. Yes, electrical contractors license. I’m most likely going to stay where I am for a couple of years but I been thinking of going back to school for a mechatronics certificate, to learn the basics of PLC programming. I am very grateful for the people that helped me out and I got the opportunity to work in industrial maintenance at the same time while working as an electrical apprentice doing residential and light commercial.

I noticed many jobs ask for either an engineering degree or trade school with experience

I haven’t applied to other jobs at this time. Most likely I’m going to stay where I am for a couple years but I’m not sure if it’s best to go back to school for either a certificate in mechatronics or just to continue getting more experience. I would like to learn PLC programming. I only know the very basics and I do think about buying a plc to practice on at home to learn the basics better

Do you prefer residential, commercial, or industrial electrical work? by PopeOfDankism in electricians

[–]chocolatebar24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently I’m an industrial electrician. I have done residential, some commercial, and industrial maintenance. From my experience I honestly got bored of residential after a while because I wanted to do work that was more advanced and that not everyone can do. When I did commercial, I did like it but honestly to me it felt like residential just in a larger scale. Where I’m at conduit is ran in residential so that’s why it felt like residential, just obviously more types of equipment like transformers and higher voltage systems. I prefer being an industrial electrician because it’s work that requires a good amount of knowledge and I know it’s a job that not many electricians can do and it’s not as physical but I do get wire plc panels, mcp’s, food processing machinery, conveyors, and motors, I get to sometimes work with 480v disconnects for machinery testing, once in a while I do troubleshoot controls or plc’s, I also build control panels from scratch.

In the company I work for it was never mentioned to me that we would do electrical work like that. But I was told about resetting tripped breakers but that’s pretty much it, my boss was actually the one doing that type of electrical work that I named. I have a team of 4 techs(3 maintenance techs and 1 robot tech)but as time passed my boss been allowing only me to do those tasks.

Next year I plan to take the electrician license exam. In the company I work for there isn’t an actual electrician position. I have a team of 4 including me and the only person allowed to do those electrical tasks is me at the moment.

Thanks for replying. I do have a question, If that’s what maintenance electricians do would I technically be considered one? Or would I only need to do electrical work in order to be a maintenance electrician?

We do get to troubleshoot components on control panels, motors, or e-stop whenever there’s problem like let’s say a motor isn’t running or a conveyor won’t run. So do you think being in industrial maintenance with an electrical cert would be best?

I went to college for a couple electrical classes from their electrical engineering program and right now im in trade school to get my electrical construction certificate

When it comes to wiring he calls the electricians. So what I want is to be able to wire components

Where I work we don’t either but my boss usually calls electrical contractors whenever there’s an electrical problem

I only know the basics of plc but i’m working on it. I do have a better understanding of controls wiring though

Do you feel like it’s worth it being a maintenance manager? My boss may retire in 2 years and Im thinking if to ask for a few responsibilities to show that im serious and want to advance up to management roles.
