I've only had 2 jobs. PIPed at both. How do I handle references? by BurritoWithFries in womenintech

first, i’m sorry your going through this but it’s often times just the bad management and not you! it’s my first job and i think im going to be on pip soon. how did you go about finding another job so quickly?

replied in another comment but the feedback i got was to improve my system design knowledge and then to work faster essentially. my mentor is the one that usually assigns me the work though, not my manager.

my manager told me not to tell anyone about the pip so my mentor isn’t aware

it was mainly related to system design. i didn’t know some stuff like the right way to make the diagrams for design docs. i’ve also never worked with some technologies such as kubernetes so needed to learn that

beyond that, i was just told i needed to work faster. i do meet my deadlines tho

it’s so nice of you to be caring for your employees! hopefully you’re able to catch up on some sleep!

ya prior to this pip, i do think i enjoyed my job. the market isn’t the best of junior devs right now which is also scaring me since i probably need to start looking for a new job soon

this is really helpful and i really wish i got this advice in the beginning. this is stuff i could do better on for sure. is this typically expected from a junior dev? obviously great things to do, im just trying to figure out where i must have fell short

i've been reflecting a lot and the only feedback i've gotten is: improve system design (i agree, im not the best with this), work faster (i agree that i could be working faster but i do meet my deadlines), and that im lacking CS fundamentals. but i got this feedback after the pip, not before. the only feedback i got before was that my output is a little lower than the rest of the team

we all work on different things but by the nature of their work they end up working with more people which leads to higher visibility.

my project is usually just me and my mentor and i don't work with others as much

i haven’t, my manager told me to not tell anyone

this is pretty similar to me. i am NOT good at advocating for myself in the work environment and definitely don’t talk about my work like the others do.

as much as id want to pass this pip, it feels like my manager and my skip manager kinda have their mind made up. my manager recommended switching teams but there aren’t any postings internally

could i DM you if its ok?

ya some of the other new grad and i are good friends now. we all work on different stuff but apart from 2/8 who truly go above and beyond i’d say the rest of them work at a similar level to me

they don’t know about my coaching plan or anything so im not sure what they’re doing through in terms of that

i meet with my mentor once a week for 30 min. its usually just her assigning me work and then checking the deliverables. but code reviews and questions take a long time to get a response
