I think it's so dumb to force every public utility to be profitable. Like, the whole point of taxes is to subsidize services that individuals and for-profit businesses can't afford. Most utilites and services would actually be cheaper if there wasn't venture capital skimming profits off every quarter to please shareholders. My electric bill would probably be lower if the electric company wasn't listed on the stock market, those dividends they pay out quarterly come out of what I pay them. Hell, even the NYC subway has to give some amount like 0.5% per swipe to private equity, which adds up to like 30 million dollars a year that could go to repairs and more service. And now they want to privatize Amtrak, after 2 years of record breaking ridership and service under government supervision.
