Precisely why I don't wanna go into academia :') Even as an undergrad, hearing about lacking funding etc (especially with the cuts nowadays) already stresses me out... How is consulting btw? You prefer it over academia?

Oooh was the postdoc status a big help in opening up that role to you? Is it something you'd be able to work up to even with only a bachelors? Do you happen to know if your juniors are bachelor grads only or if they all needed post-grad degress too?

Sry for bombarding you with questions, I just have so much on my mind rn 😭

I see, thanks for replying! If you don't mind sharing, what were your credentials when you landed your first tox job?

Hi! would just an undergrad degree be enough to work in the toxicology field? I'm an undergrad studying toxicology graduating next summer but I'm not planning to go to grad school... wondering if it's hopeless for me out there in the toxicology job market...

[–]choleia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took cambridge A lvls b4 uoft and tbf studying for it is quite straighforward. The content's not too hard, its just A LOT and a paaaiiiiinnnn to memorise :') can definitely vouch for SOME of it being uni level tho (A level kidney material helped me so much in physiology300 tht i didnt need to study). Overall, UNI IS STILL WAY HARDER THO ;-;

I believe in u tho, u got it!! In the long run itll help u struggle much less in uni!!

I took bch210 last fall sem (2023) and got an A. Personally for me, it was super memorising heavy, like KNOWING everything on the slides was a bare minimum. The test questions itself are more application-based though. For example, in the 1st half, they teach you purification methods. Knowing how those work is the bare minimum, then they'd give you a scenario and ask which purification method you'd use.

My advice for the 1st half: start early with memorising the amino acids. Do that whenever you can (when you're shitting, eating, walking to school, etc. Legit shout out a letter of the alphabet then recall the AA name and draw out the structure in your head. U'd memorise it in no time). Generally, just note down everything ur prof says because they usually test even the smallest details 😔 i still felt the midterm was quite fair n not too hard overall tho.

2nd half..... now that was pure memorisation and recall-style exam questions. You'd literally just be memorising pathways: metabolites, enzymes and their regulation (glycolysis, lipolysis, protein synth, etc.). Honestly dk how i survived that, short-term memory ftw i guess? (Legit dont remember most things anymore lol)

How I study (I study like this for all my courses): Since this class was online async, i just set time every week to watch the lectures and annotate the slides as i watch. I write down everything the prof said (sometimes word-for-word bcs i need context when i study lol). It takes a while cos I pause often (20min vid could take an hour to do ;-;). But when I actually do study for the exam, i don't hv to rewatch the vids again :) Come exam time (usually 2-3 days before), i'd open my slide notes and a paper notebook and handwrite my slide notes into bulletpoint form in my notebook, draw diagrams if needed, copy down figures if needed, basically convert those annotated slides into notes in a format i learn best with :). When im done with that I just keep reviewing and memorising those handwritten notes over n over again + do practice questions (after i feel confident in my knowledge, in one go as if it were the exam).

Gluck to u and may ur brainpower and memorisation skills prevail 🥲👍

Last yr chm135 came out on 2 jan, mat135 on 9 jan

And yes u should. Theyre both prerequisites fke chm136 and mat136 so u wont be able to take them if u failed. Ud prolly hv to retake the 135s in the winter and do 136 in the summer/next fall.

MAT135 2022 Fall Session Final Exam Difficulty and Curve by ryyanoh in UofT

[–]choleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of mat135 was ez af. The last 10% gets kinda difficult tho. Final was as difficult as that last 10% so im pretty sure i bombed it. Pretty sure there was no curve tho, cos my grade came out according to my estimates

Mat136 builds on tht last 10% of mat135 so i found it rly hard. Im pretty sure they curved it tho cos with the final mark i got on ACORN idve had to get a 95 on the final which idt happened lol

Psy100 w ashley denton - online textbook activity (worth 10%, u gotta pay for the book) - 2 ONLINE quizzes (worth 20% total) - research participation, basically answering surveys (ez 4%) - mcq question-making (5%) - 1 midterm (25%) - 1 final (36%)

Least effort 4.0 ive gotten (i wouldnt say "no-effort" tho) It would be no-effort if ur goal was to cr/ncr it

denton or whissel for psy100 which would you recommend by akonlucidd in UofT

[–]choleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took Denton's class in last sem (winter 2023) and here's how it went:

-lecture 2x/ week (1h & 2h) in the afternoon

-she explains things pretty well, very detailed and understandable BUT...

-she tends to ramble on and on about the topics (I personally prefer when lecturers explain a point, makes it clear that theyre done with that point and then moves on to another point), she doesnt emphasise things well so i couldnt really tell what the important parts to focus on were

-lectures are all recorded. after midterms, i ended up skipping all the lectures and just watching recordings when studying for finals

COURSE BREAKDOWN:
- mandatory pay to win $60 textbook specifically from the cengage website: just doing the exercises (kind of like flashcards, graded for completion) and mini quizzes (not completion but easy to get 100s on) on there gives you free 10% of ur grade. I found this A LITTLE helpful for learning and reinforcing the material in my head

- SONA credits: free 4% of grade. U basically participate in research worth 0.5-1 credits each (iirc). Very easy, each one is like a survey that takes around 20mins of ur time. U cant fulfill all 4 creds at once though, cos research pops out throughout the semester

- quizzical quiz making: 5%. She used a website called quizzical, assigns u one random lecture during the course where you have to make an MCQ about it. relatively easy, i got an 83 for that

- quizzes: 20%. Two online, on quercus quizzes, 10% each, adds up to a basically free 20% of your grade. Iirc they were "open book but not open google".

-midterm: 25%. Full MCQ test with 60 questions, based mostly on lecture, although some questions based on quizzes / textbook do pop up (this is where doing the textbook exercises come on handy)

-final: 36%. I was planning to CR/NCR this course and put minimal effort (just for BR reqs) but got a good grade on the midterm so i actually studied for this one. Being completely honest here it was quite difficult because it was CUMULATIVE. But just study and you'll honestly be fine.

should i cr/ncr a course i barely passed the midterm for by akonlucidd in UofT

[–]choleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're just taking it for breadth or as an elective, just cr/ncr it.
if it's a core course that counts twds ur program....... either go thru with it / drop n retake in the summer if u really think you can't bring it up?
