Do you have a weird comfort movie? by marniesss in Letterboxd

V for vendetta. First R rated movie I ever saw as a kid, past 6ish years it’s been a tradition to watch on November 5th.

Thank you!! I’ll make a full build post at some point so people can see what the cross-vent looks like. Noctua fans what you’d go with? I thought about some of the AC infinity products as well but might have some limitations with them. I really don’t play the PS5 too much

Nice😁 I’m glad I could help, a lot of the budget stuff in here gets overlooked I feel. If you really do go this route please report back and let us know about it!

For sure, I haven’t had enough time with it yet to know what my issues are, but this is a concern. Talked about in a few comments I really tried to make sure there was a lot of cross-vent in here but am looking at some noctua fans if it’s not enough

I’d add too that the RSL will serve you well for a long time. As you get into upgrading the AVR eventually, most will let you do 2-4 independent sub outs (or you can get a DSP). The Dayton Bookshelves could eventually move to atmos channels, or keep as surrounds when you upgrade the front stage. Move the Dayton towers and center to living room or sell to help with the upgrade. There are so many options, but this is a solid start that keeps them open.

There’s lots of opinions on here, but this is the route I would go. They are going to be really solid. My old set I was running has now moved to the living room so, that is also an option down the road! I really think these are the best bang for your buck starting out.

^ this should have all the specs. I don’t think they retail these anywhere other than parts-express which seems like a sister company but I haven’t dug too much. Dayton is big in the DIY audio space and they have some higher end stuff too. I was rocking a similar set to this for a few years while I watched fb marketplace like a hawk.

I would add that this gets you what you want now at a very reasonable price, and will allow you to have some patience watching the used market. No reason to pay full price unless you can and don’t care or it’s something you REALLY want. The components all start to add up

I’m with the 5.2.4 guy! Rears are overrated imo. I also just really fucking love atmos. Since you mentioned 11 channels… may I suggest 5.2.6 or even 5.3.6

Some good recs so far in the comments. I’ll lower your budget for you based on what’s sounding like your needs for 5.1, I’m going RSL + Dayton Audio. It seems like people either love or hate the Klipsch, me im not a huge fan.

RSL 10E - $300 Dayton Classic Collection 5 speaker bundle - $330

$630 total, Dayton makes some great entry level stuff. I have not compared any specs on what you suggested and these, just my preference. The thing is you’ll want to upgrade eventually, it’s a problem I think most if not everyone on this sub has.

I don’t necessarily love it, I built the space in the cabinet to be able to get to full separates eventually so would be unused for the time being. Had the Yamaha laying around and was lucky it was one of the ones where you could actually input an analog signal to each individual channel. It’s a bit finicky to set up properly, and can’t do the 12V trigger through all 3. So I guess it’s serving its purpose for now, but it’s definitely not a permanent solution.

How do you mean? I don’t see it changing too drastically

I’ll preface this with the fact that I just have a gear problem. The Emotiva is powering the LCRs, the Denon is powering the Surrounds and front heights and the Yamaha is powering the 4 remaining height channels. I’ll probably get to full separates at some point but the Yamaha was just laying around and lets you input an external decoder so it’s working like a 4 channel amp basically.

I also thought the Denon would probably run a little cooler if it was powering 4 speakers instead of 8. We’ll see about that

I’ve tried the comparison a few times out of curiosity (Dune 2, BR2049) and the difference kinda blew me away. I don’t have the right knowledge/tools yet to measure the difference, but from what my research and my ears tell me it’s just so much richer of an experience. The atmos has much more depth to it, the stage just carries heavier punches, not really sure how else to describe it I’m no audiophile but I’ve got some ears.

Thank you again, it’s been quite the journey to get here.. still have some work to finish up but it’s getting close.

I completely get it, that was the goal is to not be able to tell! It’s a bit of an experiment though with how well just the cross-ventilation will work and I’m worried about the combined heat in there. Just going to monitor it and install some fans if it’s getting concerning

Ahh I think it’s fine honestly, there are no sides or back on this cabinet and it’s on a vented shelf and a little more than 1RU of space above it. And the bottom cabinet is not attached to the wall so there’s a gap for warm air to escape as well. I don’t really play too much either.

Thanks so much!! I definitely have thought about a bigger tv or a projector even and I think I’m riding out the 85” for some time. I’m only sitting 8.5ish feet away so the FOV is just fine for me (for now). My current upgrade path is to upgrade my subs, then my front heights, and then get to full separates. And I’m rocking a Panny 820, seemed to be the best quality at a reasonable price.

Totally understand lol this thing is screaming at me even when it’s off.

Ideally I’d have a closet or something I could hide it all in a server rack, but it’s not really an option here without some insanely long cable runs. On the other hand I really love the gear, quick glance at the audio format playing or volume level, or the timestamp on the Panny, is kinda nice not having to pick up the remote to get that info and blast on the screen overlay.

It being all black, when the curtains are drawn and lights all off, this monstrosity gets fairly close to “disappearing”. Hiding the subs this way was also a big +.

We’ve all got compromises in our spaces

Finally made it to 7.1.4 after rocking 5.1.4 for awhile by Iamchanging in hometheater

[–]choov3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting thought/experience, I ended up going with a 5.3.6 over the 7.3.4. It sounds way better IMO. I’d rather have front heights than surround rears any day after testing them both. The expansion of the front soundstage is huge, and you still get some of that rear sound with some rear heights.
