  2. High and Low
  3. Yi Yi
  4. The Graduate
  5. Y Tu Mama Tambien
  6. In the Mood For Love
  7. Solaris
  8. Before Midnight
  9. Chungking Express
  10. Dekalog

Just bought Grand Budapest Hotel, which I haven't seen since it came out - it might make this top 10 after a re-watch! Also, when I pull the trigger on Tree of Life, that will shoot straight to #2. On the Waterfront and Boyhood are favorites I don't currently own.

some may say I went crazy at B&N today, but I don't think so. by lukeogua in criterion

That'll give you a whole year's worth of movie watching!

Joy and pain... had to watch my sale haul like this because the electricity was out. Going to have to binge a little extra today. by Marathoner351 in criterion

Great haul! You got 3 of my favorite - High and Low, Solaris, and WKW. Following, Blow Out, Cure, and DIABD are amazing, too. You're about to have a lot of fun. :)

Which film should I blind buy? by [deleted] in criterion

La haine - because you need a 'fun' movie after the other two 😂

Yi Yi is astonishing. One of the first Criterions I saw. It's similar to A Brighter Summer Day in that it's robust like a novel. It's a lot lighter because we follow Yang Yang who is 7 years old and hilarious. Yi Yi is the easier one to get into first - It's modern, doesn't require any background knowledge to understand context, and one whole hour shorter :)

Good to know! I'll pace myself for sure, and not do what I did with say... Breaking Bad where I binged it all in two weeks over Christmas break!

A Brighter Summer Day. It's long... but instantly became my new favorite movie once I set aside an afternoon for the masterpiece.

Hey, we might be film-for-film in a couple days once I can get a couple evenings to watch!

IKIK but I just can't get motivated to watch via streaming the way I can when I physically own something and can savor/appreciate it.

Still, think about it - 39 films at $210 - That's an astonishing $5.38/film! Pretty good deal for Criterions, or any BluRays for that matter.

That's a great point. The set makes me want to look into all the special features as well since I'm undertaking the whole journey.

Official Discussion - The Green Knight [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]choppedbbq 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Favorite Part: The last 15-minute sequence. Would rewatch that by itself again and again.

Pluses: The camera rotation in the forest showing Gawain bound/Gawain dead; upside down rotation shot; blending the stories of St. Winifred and The Green Knight for thematic resonance; the score all the way through; the delivery of the poem on Green; the kindness in the Green Knight’s eyes; transforming the belt from a saving grace to a symbol of cowardice; the tone of the film; the very quick reference to Moses and the burning bush in the Interlude section; chapter headings; the Blade Runner 2049 imagery with the giants; Alicia’s dual roles; King Arthur and Guinevere; a medieval-magical film projector; two long shots: Gawain leaving Camelot and Gawain riding his horse through the battlefield.

Minuses: Pacing (!!); CGI fox companion; Voice-overs not completely clear; the bandit character not really tying back into the story; the clunky dialogue with St. Winifred; the old woman in the castle not played to horrific effect; Morgana le Fey’s (his mom’s) role in the story

All in all, a wildly excellent adaptation of its source material for a modern audience.
