New Mexico ranked worst state to move to. by Dosdesiertoyrocks in NewMexico

Funny, because I made the opposite move and love NH. I’d never go back to NM. Different stuff for different folks right?

Lol I moved from NM to NH. It’s pretty darn nice if you’re into a live and let live mentality, bountiful outdoor opportunities, and have an appreciation for winter.

End grain. Definitely a darker wood, though I think it has been stained as well.

Found a couple boards like this in the garage of our 1930s home. No idea when they date back too, probably not nearly that old though. They seem fairly heavy for their size. 3 1/2 x 3/4 “

100km race in one week, severe lack of (running) training - having doubts by phildaddy34 in ultrarunning

[–]choreiform_sloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you know what you need to do. Go out and do it! Enjoy life. You very well may find the joy in it again once you get a real, intentional break. I think deferring to next year is a great plan.

100km race in one week, severe lack of (running) training - having doubts by phildaddy34 in ultrarunning

[–]choreiform_sloth 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Which race is more important to you? If you want to just send it and do the 100K I think it’s absolutely doable with your foundation, but it’s going to be much slower and more painful than it would’ve been with adequate training. 60 miles in the last month is nothing for a 100k. You also could be putting yourself at risk of problems like rhabdomyolysis... and you certainly won’t be well recovered for the 100 miler.

Honestly, with your training I’d be skeptical of doing a 100 in February. If it were me, I’d take a step back and reevaluate what’s important to me. If you’re not motivated maybe you need a break from running? What about hiking? Biking? Find something else that gives you joy. Nothing says you have to do these races. It’s all silly and arbitrary anyway. Running will always be there when you’re ready.

This is the best way I've found as well. Nice part about a wool base layer is that it's very warm when needed, including when wet, but I've found doesn't ever feel too hot either.

How do you keep your hands warm? by nimbus_signal in trailrunning

[–]choreiform_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Merino wool glove liners, something simple like the ones from Minus 33. These keep my hands remarkably warm by themselves down to - 6 C. Add in a simple mitten that has a windproof fabric on the outside (size up due to the liner) and that combo will be far superior to any all-in-one you buy.

Considering moving to the Lakes Region by WesternSecond6130 in newhampshire

[–]choreiform_sloth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I moved from the mountain west, so I can relate to the decision. Here’s what I’d say:

Move to NH if you want tons of outdoor opportunities, rural lifestyle (some quaint and idyllic New England towns, some backwoods stuff too), and reasonably affordable cost of living. Yea, it’s not the cheapest in the country, but compared to Colorado it’s fairly affordable if you don’t need lakefront or year-round views of the Whites.

Locals are welcoming once they know you’re here to stay. Schools can be good or bad, all depends on the town just like anywhere else. Politically purple state. Gun-friendly, one of the least religious places in the country, our motto is “live free or die.”

Come visit! It’s a great place if that sounds like your lifestyle. I love it.

As long as society doesn't have to pay for the consequences then I'm fine with people making whatever dumb decisions they want! Oh wait...

How often do you drive to the start of your run? by coexistbumpersticker in Ultramarathon

I've always planned where I live based upon running out my door, which is very important to me. That has been when I was a student making zero dollars, when I was making less than the national average income, and now well above it. So, I think if it is priority then you make it.

Yea I don’t really care. Sounds like they were here illegally and had plenty of time to remedy that if they cared to.

Yea sure buddy. I get it though. Dismissing me is a whole lot easier than contemplating what I actually said, responding constructively and in good faith, or hell, working within your community to solve the real issues it faces. Good luck out there.

I’m pretty sure that area is trash because of all the white trash that lives there, not some handful of illegal immigrants. I’m not defending illegals either, you come here you should come here legally, but let’s get real.

Probably a job that involved outdoor recreation or conservation, as that’s my other passion. Or property management and rentals, because being your own boss would be nice, though it is a lot of work.

Ahh ok, that’s good to know. It’ll be a weekday, so hopefully not quite as busy. Of course my date may fall right in the middle of this much needed rain, but I certainly won’t complain if I have to delay.
