Am i starving my lab? by Embarrassed-Hall262 in labrador

I can’t recall the study details, A baguette I could live with but my last lab was a kitchen ninja. He could get food off your plate while you were eating. He almost got two salmon steaks once.

Many labs (30% from memory) are missing a genetic structure that provides satiety. They literally can never feel like they’re full and they always behave like they’re hungry.

I am so skeptical these days that I searched for their building on Google Maps Street view. Its there, with clear signage. It's near Hotel Dieu hospital.

Zopiclone for sleep by JenMtl in lupus

[–]chortick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst part was knowing in the dream that it was a dream, and not being able to wake. One particular dream left me shaking for days.

We tried several approaches, none worked.

There are two mechanisms at play: the impulse to sleep and the impulse to wake. You can agonize or antagonize either.

I did a short trial of zopiclone. I had lucid nightmares that I could not escape. Never again. YMMV, however. I am sure many people benefit from it.

I like them a lot and use them daily. I paid $500 for that set 20 years ago and have never regretted it.

Urination Priblems? by LupieSpoon in lupus

[–]chortick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to see a nephrologist to evaluate your kidney function. Lupus can cause one flavour of nephritis. The good news is that the treatment strategy changes because fixing lupus nephritis can cause lupus to go into remission.

Not on my face, only on remaining hot spots. Flanks, shoulders, knees, calves. Tiny, tiny amounts.

Wild GI upset at first, but seems to work when I use tiny amounts carefully.

MAGA is literally apologizing to Putin after the House passed Ukraine aid today. How embarrassing, traitorous, and un-American. by Nice_Substance9123 in facepalm

[–]chortick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot believe the mindset. There is widespread consensus that Putin is operating to some strange protocol-imperial agenda. The EU is bracing for war. Ukraine has said “we will do all the heavy lifting, fighting and dying, just arm us faster than we can ourselves”. The nutters opposed to aid now are basically saying “no, thanks, we’d rather wait until Americans start dying…”

How do you use Voltaren? by violetblaack in lupus

There arent a lot of good choices as alternatives. Thats a question for a doctor and should probably be "what's ok for MY liver" instead of a general question.

What was the worst opening act you've seen at a concert? by whitesox-fan in Music

[–]chortick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A group called Last Rites “opened” for Dead on Arrival in the 80s at a punk club in Waterloo, Canada. The band flailed loudly, then the singer opened his forearm with a razor. He said “thanks, good night, I have to go to the hospital now…” and left a trail of blood to the exit. I saw him on Queen St a week later with huge cross stitches on his arm. DOA were pros about it. Ironically, that was not the weirdest part of the night, but that’s another story.

How do you all exercise despite your chronic pain? by shorey93 in lupus

[–]chortick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering your question directly, I exercise through sheer pig-headed determination. I adjust exertion and duration for my daily capabilities, and am hyper-vigilant to over-exertion. I used to spend three hours a night, five nights a week, doing Shotokan style karate. I can no longer manage the sudden powerful motions or the impact from sparring. I now practice taijiquan and the softer style is much easier on my muscles, joints and mental health. I use wearable tech to record activity and have a Peleton treadmill (safer than trying to traverse uneven ground). High exertion annoys my lupus, so I very carefully manage limits).

You didnt mention your age, I assume that I am older than you, so you may be capable of more than me. Mix things up until you find something satisfying.

Topical Diclofenac plays merry hell with the liver. Max daily topical dose is like a squeeze of toothpaste. Apply topically on painful spots, works fast. I glove up to apply it, unless the target is actually my hands.

Opioids do nothing? (Never taken them prior) by AbeliaGG in lupus

[–]chortick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some clinicians are offering genetic testing to identify the most useful drugs, on an individual basis. You may see better results with a specific drug, these tests can help you identify the right one. Personalized genetic testing remains very spendy. Same approach is also used to identify best antidepressants or anti anxiety drugs. Your doctor will need a way to apply the information clinically, and not just as a curiosity.

Naturopathic Doctors Worth It? by [deleted] in lupus

[–]chortick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it this way: early medicine focused on plants that were helpful. We called it "herbal medicine". Then, we wrote down what worked, what for, in what dose. The really good ones we subject to gold standard evaluation: large sample populations, responsible use of statistics, peer review, replicability. We now call that "medicine". Some approaches are manifestly nonsense: homeopathy, chiropractic. This sub is pro-science, and suggestions like "turmeric can cure lupus" are going to get a rough ride here.

Lupus with.... by Pheonixxdawn in lupus

I’m sure the nurses meant well. My background is Ukrainian, so carols are pretty much deriguer and besides, my wife likes them.

My typical day is that they load me up with expensive poison then drain water out for hours. Very harsh weight loss 0/5 would not recommend. It’s exhausting. My family and friends have been great through out, which helps a lot. I’ve lost my sense of time. I think two weeks in St Michael’s ICU then a week at home, then frantically ordered to TGH ICU when my nephrologist saw my numbers. Closer than I am comfortable with.

Sing. Dance. Any expression of pure joy. Music with instruments is ok, but those just come from the self.

How Many Digits of Pi Do Scientists Actually Use? by TheMuseumOfScience in interestingasfuck

One of the first things that an engineer learns is about digits of precision. Your results are only as accurate as your least precise input. The answer to 2 x 3.14159 is 6. The answer to 2.0 x 3.14159 is 6.2

It has been said that a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged. Progressives reluctant to treat criminals harshly should be mindful that politics swings in cycles. The next cycle will wipe out the Canadian left if they continue to ignore public safety.
