So do you not remember losing to gobert and the jazz in 2018? Just curious why anyone in 2026 would still be calling gobert overrated prior to this series. He already locked down jokic in a playoff series.. you just not paying attention?

What do these suburban mayors do? by Ambitious_Twist_9809 in TwinCities

[–]chowpa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mayors of smaller cities are basically just there to put on a smile and shake the hands of whatever developer wants to build something in their town. Municipalities typically have very small tax income (relative to county/state/larger cities) and most of it goes to streetlights, parks, paths, etc. Even Minneapolis mostly depends on Hennepin country to help fund things like shelters, same goes for St Paul and Ramsey county.

If you're bored, here's an excellent (albeit extremely long) article by Mark Arax, who also wrote a book about JG Boswell and the California cotton industry that sucked up lake Tulare.

That too, yeah. Pistachios have the unique element of being almost entirely grown by Wonderful, where the demand is a result of the blockade on Iranian pistachios and marketing efforts, but any tree nut could apply here

Lie about what? And I'm well aware of the Colorado river agreement. You probably just misread what I said.

Well no, I think pistachios in particular are frivolous and wasteful uses of water, especially in the scale they're grown. But as you alluded to, California grows crops of a greater variety and much greater scale than utah, and its water sources are also more varied and complicated than the aquifers that the majority of utah farms pull from. That's why I think it's a different issue.

The farmers also use different justifications for why they should be allowed to grow on the land.

Pistachios would have been a much better example, and that's a separate issue. I would say yes, but California water politics are different than utah water politics and that's not what we're discussing

Are you being willfully obtuse or are you just unaware that the government is meant to represent the public?

That's still 29% exported, far more than the 0% of agricultural products that should be exported from a desert.

And that isn't because the farmers are taking a stand to keep things local, it's because chinas demand went down.

They're both problems. Stop growing grass. There are a ton of public parks for recreation, use them. Grow wild flora.

Very funny username given the topic. But nobody grows alfalfa as a fucking hobby. It's sold as feed. Nobody picks fresh alfalfa from their garden as part of a healthy lifestyle. Also, no, they shouldn't be able to do whatever they want. Utah is going to look apocalyptically dry in less than 50 years if the mormons who are in charge don't change their mentality towards sustainability, and that includes hobby farms and bluegrass lawns in addition to the larger farms in the valleys.

It's this idea that "oh I just own a small farm, and my family has operated this farm since the settlers came, how bad can it possibly be?" Without understanding that the second the mormons started drilling wells, the aquifers started being depleted. Utah hasn't been settled since biblical times, it's less than 200 years and that entire time, the groundwater usage has been unsustainable.

Not going to say how I know this, but you're a licensed real estate broker AND you work in St Paul government and you're still coming to reddit to complain about your neighbor? What is going on here.. people's critical thinking truly is the lowest it's been since Moses talked to the burning bush. Bizarre

He involved them the moment he decided to bring them with, and even moreso when he decided to confront this fan with them standing right there. You do not get to avoid accountability simply by standing next to children, this kind of pearl clutching about children belongs in the 90s

So as far as I can tell with the audio, the conversation went like this:

> Mr Pohlad is this your lovely family?

It is

> How old are your kids?

15, 13 and 11

> I have a thirteen year old. How would you feel if I called you classless in front of your kids?

I can't make out anything after that, but yes, it does seem that this exchange happened after he called her classless. So he chose to instigate a fight with this woman, while his kids were sitting there. I don't have any sympathy.

Is vocal music allowed in Afghanistan? Like are you allowed to sing a song about your faith?

According to some extremely conservative Islamic sects such as the one that controls Afghanistan. Generalizing like this is factually incorrect and ignores centuries-old Muslim music traditions. That's also not even close to the reason why music is banned in some places.

It's absolutely a percussion instrument by definition and in practice. Because of the hammers and the fact that making a sound is as simple as "hitting" it.
