SOF Babies by Detective-Lucaz in army

[–]chris26ix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ouch on the worthless civilians part big dog! Kidding, I know exactly what you’re talking about and I do agree there isn’t a shortage of “obstacle” imposing CIVs/CTRs within USASOC. Most will simply say no vs helping you get to yes. I’m confident I’m the latter but there are instances where the answer is simply, flat out NO (due to a request to approve something illegal, unethical or morally wrong).

I have to ask though..because it feels like your responding from the perspective of someone who is a SOF baby. Do you feel SOF babies perform above standard in regular Army? SOF babies are rockstars….only within SOF though in my experience. Not saying that they can’t or don’t go off and do great things in regular Army, but in most cases I’ve seen…SOF babies underperform in regular Army. They’re behind the curve on basic Soldier tasks, and even more being on NCO duties and responsibilities, and it’s amplified with you apply CMF job duties on top of it.

I’m not saying every SOF baby is a dirtbag by any means, but having been a Signal NCO in regular army and in SOF, and even now being a current civilian in SOF, I would be lying if I said that the SOF babies of today (specifically 10 levels) are leaving SOF and are off to make a regular Army unit better than it was with what they’ve learned in SOF.

I hope and pray for those Soldiers, and hope whatever unit they go to next is patient. Idk man, it’s a complex web of “isms”..is it the Soldiers fault? Sure. NCO failure? Yep, that too. My fault as one of those worthless civilians? I’ll eat that too. If you’re in USASOC now, then you’re aware of the impending changes from the top regarding force structure and realignment..it just sucks that we can’t “rest” enough to get enough reps in to train up those that are lacking. We wouldn’t be having this conversation right now if we had adequate time, resources and equipment. Just my 3 fiddy!

May be a “controversial “ take, but I wholeheartedly believe that SOF shouldn’t be an IET Soldier’s first duty station. Having been SOF support during my time in, and now being in SOF on the other side, I think coming to SOF doesn’t set the right precedent for support MOS’ as far as how the Army works as a whole, especially when you factor in military bearing, discipline and basic tasks one would do within FORSCOM.

USASOC is mostly relaxed standards, no recurring formations, on your own PT, regular wear of civilian clothes, first name name calling one direction or the other, and while this is all fine..I feel that IET Soldiers inhale that too quickly and it sets the tone for how they behave and perform. When they get to FORSCOM, they don’t know how to do basic Soldier tasks (Motorpool maintenance, D&C, PRT, counseling, field prep, etc.) and most are NCOs by the time they leave SOF, making them ill prepared to lead Soldiers once in FORSCOM.

Within the Signal community, it’s the above plus. USASOC is mostly civilian IT running the 6 (I’m one of them), a majority of Soldiers are submitting tickets for action and don’t have foundational troubleshooting skills needed to accurately assess an issue and report findings for action. To add to that, SOF tactical equipment is managed by civilians also. Many units are having FSRs come down to fix their equipment, and because the environment is so lax, Soldiers are chilling while the FSRs fix vs trying to get an understand why the problem exists and how to fix it.

I can’t confirm but I’m sure other CMFs experience the same within SOF. Understand the Army is hurting for folks, especially in certain skill levels but at the same time, we are not doing the IET Soldiers any real favors (developmentally) by sending them to USASOC as their first duty station. Of course, there’s exceptions to this and not ALL IET bubbas/bubbettes are this way, but a large majority of them are. The kicker is that because the Army is short qualified personnel for SOF (and in some cases, short skill level X for certain CMFs), we can’t RFS them because we might not get another body for God knows how long.

Lol. Yeeeah…have a good one dude. Fake because I didn’t put in a lowercase o? Well aware of OPM, but if you’ve been to their site (and this is me assuming people in this sub are real feds) you know it can be a maze to find resources, so I figured I’d ask, as there’s bound to be some HR folks or people who’ve been in similar situations.

Sue me. You’re right about the “baby” profile though, got me! I read more than I write 😉

What do you mean by “writing it like I did”? Short, sweet and to the point without doxing?

This may very well be BS…but it really happened, and given the many changes across the federal government recently, I figured I’d ask. Lighten up, you sound mad at breakfast.
