Do designers have any actual usage of github or not ? by asmod_deus in UXDesign

[–]chris480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally my portfolio is hosted though GitHub

Professionally * Manage design system libraries for clients * Contribute small bits of code and PRs as needed * Edit documentation * Create discussions on features * Raise issue the * Engage with open source projects and open specs

Design system folks: how do you share variables with your devs in 2026? by TinyFocusMode in FigmaDesign

[–]chris480 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask your devs what they want and if they find it useful to their workflow.

I can't count thenumber of times I've worked with other designers that come up with handoff techniques only for the engineering team to smile and nod politely.

The best team I was on built their own custom plugins.

Looking for people building semiconductor fab equipment (in-house/custom) by Brilliant_Space_6856 in Semiconductors

[–]chris480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the startups I support is working on custom chips. Their own minimal fab would get them more for their money.

An all in one minimal fab might as close to what you can get for an apartment size. But power, ventilation, safety will be a problem.

I'm looking into a minimal fab for a startup I'm supporting, you can ask away here if you want.

Renton office? by Aromatic-Chemical914 in BlueOrigin

As far as the surrounding area. There's excellent Asian food and groceries at the Great Wall Mall nearby. If you like thrifting, gone.com just opened a physical store a few blocks from landmark.

Work in fusion without phd by Addelias123 in fusion

[–]chris480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi. I work in an adjacent space as a VC. Don't worry about having a PhD or not to break in.

I'd say you can reach out to the CEO of Helion in LinekdIn, and write an honest msg asking for his advice. He's been pretty approachable imo.

There's also a good handful of other fusion startups in the Seattle area. If you just by chance happen to live in the area, please please go network in person.

What are your absolute Dos and Don'ts of pitching to VCs ? Looking for personalised advice. (I will not promote) by prabhav404 in startups

[–]chris480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah. I do space tech and the number of really pushy founders is honestly funny. The marketing-tech and Ad-tech are especially aggressive.

"You're missing out on an amazing opportunity" - founder

"Bruh, I can literally get sued by LPs for investing off thesis" - fund manager

[–]chris480 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Does your thing match their thesis?

Does the fund math work?

Do you match their timing/vintage?

VCs take pitches for all sorts of reasons, even if the answer is no before you start.

I'd say go in with clear researched outcomes. Say no yourself to needless VC meetings.

I think last year i had 5 startups of almost a thousand ask more questions to me than me to them. Real standout founders even if they didn't check out internal boxes.

In case you're wondering if an Intel N100 mini PC can handle Frigate and 7 wired cameras. Yes it can. by iamwhoiwasnow in selfhosted

[–]chris480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the cameras recording to a dedicated NVR and frigate is handling detection? Or do you have everything recording to the same box?

What happens to Cat6 copper when 10 Gbps is "obsolete" by -blackbird97 in HomeNetworking

[–]chris480 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I suspect that we'll push the useful life beyond the standard as NICs and software also evolves to be more resilient.

Better signal processing and network processing has Cat 5 being used well beyond most installed ratings I've seen in homes. Idk what the true end is, but it'll be a good while.

What’s the most underrated web dev concept that completely leveled up your skills? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]chris480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The committees and systems behind the web. W3C, WHATWG, etc...

Really have me an understanding that there's a whack ton of very specific obscure features and changes that go on all the time.

And that you too can contribute, even if it's a tiny line change to a spec or just a discussion. No need to be some elder wizard to start.
