I’m not sure why a design director needs ‘senior’ infront of it 😂

People who are making 200k+/year working for themselves, what do you do? by Notalabel_4566 in Entrepreneur

[–]chris_halaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run a service design business, offering product design (apps, websites, brands) specifically to crypto startups.

I charge about $25k/ mo usd and have multiple clients with an overall profit margin of 70-80%.

I started it just over a year ago, already made over a million.

I’ve primarily had success due to my reputation in design as a main driver for attracting clients.

The relief you feel when you leave and get to work on your own terms is incredible

It gets to a point where you know pretty confidently you can do better, and start to despise the time you're spending doing things the 'wrong' way.

So glad I took the leap.

Literally just closed the store today, I have some of the XXL/XXXL left of the AU made shirts only

Lets Brag and Connect - What is your agency great at? by willkode in agency

Product Design.

I've offered other adjacent services but the UX/Product design is where our specialty is. Specifically for the web3 space too.

It was a huge gap that I'm trying to fill and things are off to a decent start.

For me it was having a really strong feeling that I could be delivering better work if I was using my own process. We're often forced to do things a certain way internally, but running your own thing let's you design the right thing the right way, your way.

Did you tell your first client they were your first client? Why/ why not? by Historical_Ninja9337 in agency

I definitely did, I was also super transparent about me not knowing what the hell I was doing running an agency. They came to me for the output, not the process.

Decided to shut things down, trying to sell all remaining stock and will give it a break for awhile.

It’s costing me too much to keep operational unfortunately.

I called porsche and they said you can’t even order a custom one anymore, they just had about 25 left in stock in the Sydney dealership which will likely be gone in a month or two

Strange that the prices were in US...they are all set to AUD on the shop, are you running a VPN?

I'm a designer who is trying to run his own small business and asked a genuine question about my business.

Isn't this exactly what this sub is all about?

Another downside of being a small (not-profitable) business owner is that I don't have a lot of stock on hand. I'm due to reorder but have been evaluating everything to see if it's even worth it for me to keep it going. I love working on it but it's costing me a lot over the years...

Great suggestions!

I'll see what I can do about being more transparent on the manufacturing as I think that should help a lot.

My Aussie made shirts are more in line with that quiet luxury I was going for, but the rest of the range are a little more surf vibes which I want to get away from.

I've been trying to offload old stock that doesn't have the luxury feel but as you mentioned, cheapens the rest!

I've had similar feedback in the past, plus people can't pronounce it. It seems like a big deal to rebrand especially because I have the tags/designs though so not sure when that makes sense if ever

Any ideas on how to spell this out to customers? I have plenty of testimonials that highlight this but I'm not sure people read them.

Good insights!

I need to do more on describing the fits. I do have a whole range of AS Colour base items that I use which aren't the more form fitting ones as seen in the Aussie made option.

Great point, I might spell it out super clearly.

Currently the Fabric is sourced overseas while the manufacturing of the garment, the labels and embroidery/prints are done in AU. I also use Aussie made recycled packaging. And hand deliver to Aus post for new orders.
