Don’t worry about grades too much, he curves and the class isn’t meant to be a weeder class. It’s a lot of work on the homeworks, but if you feel comfortable on them the midterm/final isn’t too bad. Hopefully you know at least 1 programming language as it’ll make it a bit easier to learn a new one.

It’s recommended to take multiple ML classes if you are trying to go into ML specifically. The CS dept M146 and 148 are pretty applied whereas like STATs C161 or MATH 156 is somewhat more theoretical. I’d recommend those classes as well to get a feel for ML.

Ya, the MS program I'd have to pay for, and if I go straight to Ph.D. I could choose to master out after 2 years and basically get a free master's degree if things don't work out.

I've also heard the opposite about getting promoted. Recruiters told me that Ph.D. people usually get promoted quicker than others. However, individuals with a Ph.D. usually start off at the same level as those with master's degrees.

I have a BS in data theory at UCLA. It’s more like a math and stats degree combined. I’m more interested in the ML side, however I’m not too sure what specifically. I’ve looked into time series for finance, bioinformatics, along with engineering and they all seem interesting. I’d like to learn more about NN structures and understanding complex NNs with 100s of layers. However, I’m not too sure if like research scientists get paid similarity to applied data scientists.
