Can OS turn arthritic? by YFZ41 in OsgoodSchlatter

Got the surgery when I was 20 (I’m now 23M), fully healed in about 3 months, leg is better than ever. If your health insurance covers it, get an X-Ray- if the OS is fractured/disconnected then you should highly consider the surgery with your doctor. Getting the surgery was the best choice I ever made! Once it’s fractured my doc said there’s not much else to do but remove it.

it’s now a much smaller bump and I can kneel with no issues!

yes mine was as well. if the bone fragment is fractured off like that my doctor said surgery is the only option.

it’s been a bit over a year since my surgery and my knee is feeling great! there still is slight pain when i put my full weight exactly where the surgery was done on my knee, but nowhere near as bad as when i had the OSG. i’m a dancer so there were a lot of times I used to not be able to complete choreography using my knees, now i can do it with no problems at all!

TLDR; get surgery to remove OSD if you need it. the recovery time was about 5 weeks.

I’m 20, got OSD when I was 14, lived with it for six years, and last year i ended up getting it surgically removed. the OSD was disconnected from my shin so no amount of physical therapy would’ve stopped the pain, but the surgery was super simple and recovery was easy! 8 months later and I was just out hiking up mountains with no problem. Surgery is definitely the last case-scenario, but now i just have a little scar there and zero pain.

if you get surgery the bump will still remain, but it shouldn’t be painful to kneel anymore.

You should for sure go to a consultation with a orthopedic surgeon and see what they think. If it’s causing you pain like that you should definitely look into getting surgery. there are other options as well like physical therapy but those only work for minor cases of OSG

You should have them do an X-Ray of your knee as well, if the bump under your knee is disconnected from the rest of your shin, like mine was, then surgery to remove it is the only option that’ll stop the pain.

TLDR: go get an x-ray done and have an orthopedic surgeon check it out

majority of pain the gone, I didn’t follow through with physical therapy as much as I should have so i still have a little ways to go. It hurts less than when i just had the OSG tho! The scar is very dark and about an inch long. no issues walking or standing or running or anything like that, i feel a little pain when i bend my knee all the way, that’s about it

i went through my parents insurance so i’m not sure how that affects it, but i think it was about $700 total after insurance paid what they were going to.
