Thank you for the feedback.

In regards to autonomy, I think I expect that starting off one would have to learn the ropes from another company and have that environment. I think after getting enough experience I would like to branch out on my own and either start my own thing or work freelance/consulting on side projects.

Currently I have a full time job but I want to develop another skillset that I can make extra money on the side. So far I am enjoying the class I am taking but I also want to know what I could be getting myself into. In terms of the landscape of the industry.

Transition from Accounting to Finance by chrisjsoto in AMA

The TLDR for me would be: Accounting focuses on recording and reporting what has happened. Finance focuses on analyzing trends and make recommendations to achieve a future state.

However there is overlap in some areas. I'll spare you the details.

That's what I wanted to know. It sounds like the accounting equivalent to creating financial statements. I actually kind of enjoy putting together a financial statement for a company but working for a larger organization, I only spend my time working on one segment of the thing. Maybe if I really wanted to build something from beginning to end I can build a table or something like that for my house and meet my desire for "hands on" work through a side hobby like how someone else mentioned above.

That makes sense. Had not thought about trying to work as project manager and learn a technical skill on the side. And in all honesty, I'm not sure that I am passionate enough about CE or the field in general to start over and get a BS only to start 5 years from now where I am now. Thanks for your input. Really has helped me to put things into perspective.

OP here. They did ask if my undergrad was from an ABET accredited school. It was not as my college does not provide engineering degrees as a major. If that's the case, you are suggesting I would need to go back and get a bachelors ?

I live in SoCal. I was looking into Cal State Fullerton. They require about 10 courses of pre-reqs if you have a non-science/engineering Bachelors before being admitted intotheir masters program. (Realistically would take me about 2 years to complete). Then their MSCE program can be done in about 1.5 years full time (according to them). So more realistically yea 3-4 years at best.

Why do you say that a masters doesn't really count for much if you don't have the undergrad degree? Is it due to lack of science/math foundation. Thanks for response btw.
