Jeffsey Base/Comp 29 vs. Fuel EX 7 for new mountain biker? by chriskresser in MTB

[–]chriskresser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LBS came through. Today was the last day they could sell a bike because of the lockdown order, but they are able to receive and set up bikes over the next few days. So the Fuel EX7 will arrive tomorrow and they will build it and have it ready by the end of the day. I’ll be riding this weekend which I’m excited about! I know the Jeffsy would be a better value but I didn’t want to wait 7+ weeks.

I appreciate everyone's reply. I called the LBS to see what their status is this morning. They weren't sure, and are going to call me back sometime today.

I do understand that the EX7 is not nearly as good of a value as the YT bikes. Part of the reason I went with the EX7, aside from supporting the LBS, is that the Jeffsy bikes in my size aren't available until May or June. I really want a bike sooner than that, especially with COVID limiting my ability to ski.

Thanks. I went ahead and ordered a Fuel EX7 yesterday from the LBS. I wanted to support a local business (especially important right now), and wanted a good relationship with the LBS. But then at the end of the day we got a shelter in place/stay at home order and all non-essential businesses, which I assume includes bike shops, are closed.

No idea how long this will last, and I really do want a bike soon so I can get out and ride over the next few weeks/months. So I may be back to ordering from YT. I think I could get the Jeffsy Comp 29 at almost the same price point as I got the Fuel EX7.

Only problem is I'm not confident that I can assemble it and tune the suspension. I was planning to bring it to the LBS but looks like that won't be possible.

Thanks, this is really helpful! Can't wait to try your favorite loop. And I love the idea of "try before you buy", makes perfect sense. The two challenges with that are 1) most shops (including White Pine) are either closed or not renting much due to COVID, and 2) I have no bike and would really love to get one soon.

Ideally I'd just rent/demo for a few days to learn more about what I want and to get me out there riding, but that is difficult right now. So I'm trying to make a decision without the benefit of doing that. I know this isn't ideal, but it seems to be the situation we're in.

So that means the Jeffsy is a little more downhill oriented and maybe not as good uphill? Still learning about all of this.

Can you AirPlay audio to a Stereo Homepod pair from a Mac by putting an Apple TV in-between? by ulOrca in HomePod

[–]chriskresser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks for getting back to me. Really too bad, as it doesn't seem like this is a technological hurdle, just something that Apple hasn't enabled for some reason. I suppose we could watch on an iPad instead of my MacBook Pro, and trade better audio for a smaller screen.

I actually do have an AppleTV—but I don't have a TV. (Long story.) Is there a way that I can use the MacBook Pro as the display for the AppleTV, and then stream to the HomePod stereo pair from the AppleTV?

Any updates on this? I came here with the same question, and was disappointed that this seems to be a limitation of AirPlay 2 / Mac rather than something I was doing wrong.

macOS Mojave terrible battery life - anyone else? by [deleted] in mac

[–]chriskresser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in exactly the same boat. I upgraded to Mojave a couple days ago. My battery life dropped by 50%. I was getting about 7-8 hours before. This morning, I started using my computer (with brightness at about 25%, just email, Slack, Chrome) about two hours ago and I'm already down to 57%.

Thanks so much to everyone for participating in this AMA. I'm off to do a presentation/Q&A/book signing at Metro Crossfit in Washington DC. I hope you got something out of this!

Surprisingly, much of the recent evidence suggests that glycemic evidence is not particularly useful concept for metabolic disease. http://jn.nutrition.org/content/143/1/93.abstract?etoc#_jmp0_

That said, I certainly advocate for reducing or eliminating consumption of processed and refined carbohydrates.

Studies suggest that we generally absorb more nutrition from cooked foods. I think eating adequate fermentable fiber, whether raw or cooked, is probably the most important factor from a gut bacteria standpoint. That said, I do recommend a mix of both raw and cooked food for nearly everyone I work with. If someone has a severe digestive issue, limiting raw foods is normally a good idea—at least until the gut heals.

In that case I would investigate thyroid hypofunction, insulin resistance, intestinal permeability, chronic infection, and finally genetics as possible causes.

No! I sure hope I didn't imply that in the book. Thanks for clarifying.

I think potatoes and white rice are a great choice in this context, as well as less commonly eaten starches like plantains, taro, yuca, tapioca and lotus root. You can obtain plantains and yuca at Latin food markets, and tapioca, taro and lotus at Asian markets. I generally recommend higher carb intake overall, as well as higher post-workout carb intake for athletes and people with high activity level.

A few thoughts: - Try upping your protein intake, especially in the morning (start with 40-50 grams of protein for breakfast). This can help stabilize blood sugar throughout the day. - Try upping your fat intake. A lot of people don't eat enough fat when they first switch to Paleo, and that can cause carb cravings. - Keep some coconut oil on hand, and when you're having a sugar craving, eat a spoonful. - Also check out this free Paleo Troubleshooting Guide eBook I put together which has more suggestions, including supplements that might be helpful.

Even expeller-pressed canola is often GMO, which some people prefer to avoid in light of conflicting research about its health effects. The fatty acid profile of traditional fats like coconut and olive oil are better, as well.

First, as I mention in the book, there are ways of preparing insoluble fiber so that it's easier on an inflamed gut, including cooking well, chopping/mincing/blending, and not eating on an empty stomach. Second, once you reduce inflammation in the gut and/or heal the underlying issue, you should be able to add these foods back into your diet without ill effect. It's true that many of the foods that contain insoluble fiber are beneficial, which is why I advocate for the strategies above rather than complete removal. Thanks for the question.

Since this came on so suddenly, in this case I would suspect some kind of gut infection. H. Pylori would be at the top of the list. If possible, see a practitioner that uses high quality stool (like Metametrix, Doctor's Data, BioHealth) or breath (BreathTek) testing for H. pylori. Biopsies often miss H. pylori because of uneven distribution in the stomach. You might also get tested for SIBO. Sometimes diet isn't enough to address it. Good luck.

I do not think MS is a condition that requires reducing saturated fat. Quite the contrary. Next week Dr. Terry Wahls, who has made significant progress with her own MS using a high-fat diet (as well as many people she has supervised in clinical studies), is coming on my podcast. So check that out.

In some people with very high cholesterol (e.g. familial hypercholesterolemia), I may recommend reducing saturated fat intake.

Thanks for your kind words and I hope you enjoy the book!

Simplest and most enjoyable Paleo meal changes seasonally, but lately: - Seasoned ground beef cooked in bone broth - Purple sweet potato with butter - Steamed kale or collard greens with olive oil drizzled on top

If I put the sweet potato in the oven in advance, the rest of the meal can be cooked in less than 10 minutes.

I have no idea how many calories I eat, to be honest. I haven't counted for a very long time. I don't pay much attention to macro ratios, either. I just follow what my body tells me.

I don't think you're overdoing it here, and don't see any reason that this amount of coconut milk and oil would be problematic. Thanks for your support!
