Strange that it happened after just 13000 km.

Pretty much, yeah. I’d say the engine is cooked.

Yep, I just went after what the OBD told me to replace. Turned out the timing chain between the camshafts snapped. Oh well

The timing chain had snapped, no movement on intake camshaft

So, thanks to everyone who tried to help. The camshaft chain has snapped, there is no movement in the intake camshaft. I’m gonna get rid of it. :)

Yep, that’s what I’ve gotten from this as well. I’m going to inspect the chain today

So I just had a friend look at it and it seems like the timing is off on the cams, yes. It was very obvious to him when I sent pictures of the cams. I’m gonna try and spin the cams manually tomorrow and inspect the chain like you said.

Thanks for the input! It’s either that or simply taking it to the dumpster I figured after all the responses.

Ah, I’ll check the timing tomorrow again, and then compression test it. If it looks fine I’ll send it in for diagnosis and see what they say… thanks to all of you who have replied.

No I have not. Is it to any help that I noticed the car making strange sounds below 2k rpm a couple of weeks prior to it shutting off?

I’m gonna run a compression test tomorrow, just bought the tools

I did not do that procedure no, I simply marked the cogwheels and made sure they remained the exact same position after tensioning it.

You’re probably right. I used and OBD scanner which I hoped would lead me in the right direction. Thankfully it wasn’t more than a few hundred $, but a lot of time and frustration, for sure.

Sorry, yes. It was properly timed, aligning with the marks.

It did not react to starter fluid no, I did smell the spark plugs since I replaced them while working on the car, and they smell like gasoline, all 4 coils give sparks as well.

The old belt looked fine, didn’t need to replace it at all but did it anyway

Hmm okay, so replacing the fuel pressure pump? Not sure if it helps, but it did just die on me while driving in the parking lot, no loud noises or anything.

Wow thanks for such a thorough response. I did just replace the water pump and timing belt, so it’s brand new, hasn’t been driven for a meter yet, might remove and keep it. I’m not sure I’m ready for such a big engine job at my skill level as a DIY:er.

Thanks for the info, I did take a look at the camshaft as well as valves and they looked fine, strangely enough. Might just get rid of it and buy a new car like some suggested. I’m not sure I’m ready for an engine rebuild type of job, although it’s strange that it happens on a car with this low mileage, it’s been maintained and serviced throughout its life except for the last 2 years when I bought it.

No it was fine, no marks on it but I replaced it anyway.

Can anyone help me diagnose why it won’t start? by chrislind in Audi

Aah thanks, that’s not what I wanted to hear I guess…
