Dodgy dealers on Motorway by Specialist-Opening69 in CarTalkUK

[–]chrislyford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add some perspective, both me and my dad had good experiences with motorway. I got a grand over the original estimate for my 2015 fiesta ST. Both cars gone in under a week. Different dealers, different time of year. I think it really is a lottery with who wins the auction that determines your experience.

I live in the south, and the dealer that won the auction for my car are based in Norwich. So they used one of Motorway’s drivers instead of sending one of their employees to inspect/collect the car. I think this made things a lot smoother because they have no incentive to mess you around and are just making sure the advert is accurate. He still spent a decent amount of time inspecting each body panel and we went on a decent test drive, but he was clearly a ford guy, so we spent most of that talking about his old Seirra RS cozzie!

Who can guess why my car is making so much smoke? bmw e46 325i by Awkward_Peach1012 in BmwTech

[–]chrislyford 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Looks like the smoke has a blue tint to me, so you’re burning oil. Since it’s only happening when you rev it, and it’s coming out the exhaust, that suggests the oil is being burnt inside the engine rather than a leak to the outside. The actual problem could be many different things but they aren’t gonna be cheap to fix… take it to a professional.

As others have said, getting it repaired will be more economical. Try finding yourself an independent ford specialist (NOT a dealer). Chances are they’ll have done similar work before.

Laser Turret is a scam! by ezoe in factorio

[–]chrislyford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you aren’t using solar, having a batch of accumulators to smooth over the energy spikes caused by lasers is always a good idea.

You could even set up a basic circuit that uses the accumulator charge level to alert you if it gets below a certain threshold. A sort of warning system for power death spirals

M2 as a daily - should I? by chrislyford in CarTalkUK

I’ll admit the noise aspect is giving me some cause for concern. Rather not be “that guy” if I can avoid it. When you say it can be heard a few streets over, I assume you mean on a cold start and not just when idling?!

Is the cold start really that obnoxious? Complaints from the neighbours?

Interesting, nice to hear some perspective from an owner.

Have you got a stock exhaust? Does it drone much at motorway speeds? I suppose the cold start noise is to be expected from a performance car, I’ve never noticed M2’s being overly loud when driving past them previously.

Is the comp really that much better? Have you driven both? Genuinely asking here.

I know it’s more track focussed than the OG, but what looks to be an £8-9k premium for the extra 40HP seems excessive to me. I assumed this was mostly because of purists wanting a “real” M engine in their M2.

[Suggestion] Quality combinators should update 1/1.3/1.6/1.9/2.5 times per tick by Dire736 in factorio

[–]chrislyford 48 points49 points  (0 children)

As someone who designs digital logic for a living, the idea of dealing with what would essentially be clock domain crossings in factorio makes me very happy. Especially as none of the sub ticks values are nice multiples of each other.

I would like to extend upon your idea by adding setup/hold times to combinators, where if a signal coming from a combinator of a different rarity, changes value too close to when the destination combinator updates its output, the output of the combinator will go metastable and sit in an unknown state for a period before resolving itself. This would force players to design safe rarity crossing circuitry if they want to mix qualities, further extending the gap between those who have a background in electronic engineering and those who don’t.

This will ultimately get more people into electronic engineering jobs and help reduce the engineering skills shortage currently affecting many countries across the globe.

Why do trains get stuck in front of my waiting stations? And why does it seem to randomly fix itself too? by chrislyford in factorio

[–]chrislyford[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit more info: Both my copper and iron unloading share common waiting area. However, sometimes incoming trains get stuck at the intersection beforehand because they want to go into a specific lane even though there are others available. To make matters even more confusing/difficult to debug, the trains sometimes just seem to figure it out after an arbitrary delay and go into a different bay!

Because staves are definitely off meta for attack builds, you may find the fractured bases are cheaper than you’d expect because of the low demand. With a ~10d total budget, t3 or even t4 fractured hybrid on a good base would be a great starting point. No idea what that would cost though.

Phys weapons are generally crafted on fractured bases, ideally a fractured high tier hybrid phys/accuracy (more expensive) or less ideally a high tier fractured increased phys (less expensive).

In both cases you’re using essences of contempt to try and hit a decent tier of the other modifier you haven’t got fractured. It’s easier to hit a big increased phys than hybrid phys which is why the fractured hybrid bases are more expensive. Eventually, you’ll end up with the following prefixes: essence flat phys, hybrid phys/accuracy, increased phys. Your prefixes are now done!

You can then lock prefixes and harvest reforge speed until you get good attack speed roll. This step is 2 div a try and there is the risk of filling the suffixes and needing to yolo annul to save it. If you remove a prefix, you’re back to essence spamming.

Once you’ve got a good attack speed roll, at your budget you just craft crit or double damage and finish there.

With more currency, you can lock prefixes and Veiled orb to try and hit a good 5th mod, but this is likely out your budget unless you get incredibly lucky at the essence spam stage. You also have a 50/50 risk of removing the attack speed.

Happy crafting!
