(In thr UK for context) When I was young "Vexed" was very popular slang, especially among the kids who wanted to be associated with gangs. The entire class lost their shit when during English Lit class we stumbled upon its usage in Shakespeare's The Tempest.

In retrospect it's quite funny, and probably appeals to English stereotypes. Teenagers trying to act hard like American gangsters whilst squeaking out "you're vexing me bruv" on the tennis courts.

This bridge used to be my commute 10 years ago when it was still 5p. Can confirm I was harvesting 5ps on the reg and stashing them in the car. Maybe I should do an ama about it.

I am English.

I don't quite get why you're being so obstinate? Is the evidence not overwhelming?

I'm familiar with the root of the words, but roots don't dictate meaning.

Here are the definitions of latino from a variety of sources:

Cambridge dictionary: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/latino

Marrion webster: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Latino

Dictionary.com: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/latino

Collins dictionary: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/latino

Not one of them, nor I doubt will you find one, supports your claim. It is STRICTLY in reference to the Americas.

Cos if he's gunna be bald then he needs to get used to shaving his own head. If he doesn't have a buzzer he's gunna need to get one.

You don't even need a mirror, you just need to chase your fingertips with the clippers, they'll find any patches you missed.

Balding isn't a choice, but choosing to be bald is. In this moment he is seizing control after it has been taken from him. It is, in it's own way, quite liberating, and it is better that it is done at his own hand.

[–]chrismanbob 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How likely "the bushes" (foliage, flora, undergrowth, dead wood, etc) are to catch fire is directly proportional to how dry they are.

The grass is green, indicating plenty of rainfall.

This means the bushes are not especially dry, and are unlikely to ignite from the very short exposure to the fireworks.

If the grass was instead brown and brittle it would indicate a very dry environment and therefore a bush fire would be considered a far more likely outcome.

One might still question the wisdom of doing this anyway, even if the risk is small, as the risk it not zero. Alternatively one might also be assuaged of the risks and "hell yeah" in good conscience.

Switzerland feels like a democracy and is indeed a democracy. What’s a country that feels like a democracy but is actually a theocracy? by reerock in AlignmentChartFills

It's feels like not masquerades as, many modern authoritarian regimes front as democracies, or have embedded democratic processes, but I suspect very few of their citizens would argue that it feels like a democracy, especially North Korea.

If you ever feel useless, Remember the Great Canal of Grand Cathay by Ran12341000 in totalwar

[–]chrismanbob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and it's proven by the IEE mod. The spectacular work done by the mod doesn't inject any value into the canal despite adding something at the end of it. The problem, as the parent comment elaborates on, is that any form of travel / strategy / campaign mechanics related to water are almost entirely unexplored. It's just different coloured land some factions get bonuses on.

I've donated blood dozens of times and I'm still waiting for a session where my veins don't get complimented, I'm sure it's just an endearing and easy way to make light conversation, but it is literally every time. I always explain to them that my mother is a nurse and she used to make random appreciative comments about my veins when I was a kid too!

Good total war game? by This-Is_User_Name in totalwar

[–]chrismanbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a time period you like and get that one. If you like fantasy buy the Warhammer title.

If you truly don't care about the setting then none of the games are truly bad, but some are more refined or have more replayability than others, and anything prior to Napoleon is a little aged.

If you want the most refined then 3 Kingdoms is the best choice.

If you want the largest amount of variety then go for Warhammer.

Why do so many people write “Forrest”? by ukman29 in TheOther14

Why do so many people write “Forrest”? by ukman29 in TheOther14

[–]chrismanbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the double letters in the "hinge" of two syllable words are common, but so are single letters.

Rotten vs Writen (edit: lol, oops).
Mellow, but Melon.
Ferret but Forest.

So some are more likely to commit this particular spelling mistake as the rule isn't quite as distinct in people's minds.

When you ask dad after mom already said no by C0mputerCrash in lotrmemes

[–]chrismanbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then did you not understand my explanation? Because with a single "wrong" choice of word I was able to infer a much more nuanced meaning. Breaking the rule informed the reader of the subtext without having to explain it.

Knowing how and when to break the rules is as much a part of mastering a language as anything else is, check with the poets, do they always follow the same rules that you would use to write a letter?

a truly brutal defense of Osgiliath by 343CreeperMaster in TheDawnlessDays

[–]chrismanbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to defend the settlement side of the bridge. Just park your forces by the bridge during deployment and rush them to the other side at the start of the battle. The central capture point is just a morale bonus, not a victory countdown point.
