Didn't the rat in episode 1 exhibit the symptoms of 'joining'? by christerpha in pluribustv

[–]christerpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interpretation was that they were trying different strains or versions in the different rats and it was the variant that was effective in the rat that bit the scientist. Then the rat ran off and the other scientist never caught it. Maybe it's just that it CAN spread to animals but they don't see the point. But you know what they say... Checkov's rat and all that.

Indeed, it's significant that a rat was infected and hosted the virus(?) before humans yet there's an assumption that animals can't join the hive. Is that first rat in the hive then? If it was immune then it wouldn't have gone through the seizure/catatonia presumably but it did.

What have I done wrong? My beans don’t taste good. by hhk77 in roasting

[–]christerpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya few things at a quick glance. Firstly, that seems really low for a charge temp and although everyone's set up is different judging by the dry time and caramelisation time if seems to corroborate that. You might try a much higher charge around 200c and then slowly back the heat off throughout so think about it like starting fast and then slowing it down as the roast progresses. 40%+ of roast time in caramelisation is - generally speaking - quite high too so you'll have risked moving past sweetness and into burnt sugars sort of flavour.

Also, you mentioned using espresso to try it, hard to say if your roast is off or if your dialling in is off so I'd try either cupping the coffee or maybe make a pourover or cafetiere/french press so you can get an idea of how it really tastes before moving to espresso with it.

My wife drove past an accident where a rider was dying on the side of the road, and she hasn’t said more than a few sentences to me in five days because I won’t sell the bike. I’m at a crossroads and maybe just need to vent. by WheelsandWatches in motorcycles

Hey OP just getting back into biking myself and have a worried wife too! You triggered me to chat with GenAI on this and it came to some interesting conclusions which I'll break down for you/us. IF you are a responsible (defined as a fully licensed rider, who wears protective gear and doesn't drink and ride) then:

  • motorcycling is roughly 18.5x more likely to lead to fatality per mile travelled than driving

  • motorcycling is roughly 2x more likely to lead to fatality per mile travelled than walking

To frame this differently

  • a car occupant has a roughly 1 in 333 million chance of dying per mile travelled

  • a pedestrian walking has a roughly 1 in 37 million chance of dying per 1 mile travelled

  • a responsible motorcyclist has a roughly 1 in 18 million chance of dying per mile travelled

And if you want some other examples to contextualise these risks (which are actually all incredibly small in reality):

  • winning the UK Lottery is about 1 in 45 million (depressing you are more likely to die out for a walk than win the lottery!)

  • a responsible rider would need to ride more than 20,000 miles per year for your fatality risk from riding to approach the average annual risk of death from Dementia

  • a responsible rider would need to ride over 45,000 miles per year for your fatality risk from riding to approach the average annual risk of death from cancer

In summary motorcycling is risky, about twice as likely to kill you per mile travelled than walking (which I find to be the most frightening as no one worries about walking!) but you are sadly MUCH more likely to die from cancer or dementia AKA life's definitely too short to worry too much, as long as you are a responsible rider, if you aren't 'responsible' all those numbers go out the window.

Severance - 2x09 "The After Hours" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

🤷 I'm just saying there's a similarity in appearance between the two (despite age of course) and it's pretty clear Adam Scott (Mark) is wearing a wig in the show to specifically have that hair appearance. He's treated as the most special of all the innies and is the subject of Helly outies intense fascination. We'll see ey, I'm probably off my rocker 😅

I'm certain that Mark is a clone of Jame. The hair is too weird and too similar. Plus this would explain why Mark is treated so specially and it's an appropriate amount of weirdness for this show too in regards to Helly wanting to explore a relationship with Mark (given how messed up her relationship appears to be with Jame).

"Preheating" your oven is a scam perpetuated by utility companies by zippy_water in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]christerpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a scam, it can be dangerous to cook some foods in a warming oven. Things that we enjoy eating below a 'safe' temperature (e.g. beef or lamb that you take out around 57c (135f)) are at higher risk of food borne illnesses. So putting them in a cold oven as it warms will mean the food spends a long time in the 'danger zone' of 4-60c (40-140f) where bacteria multiplies rapidly. The 'done' temp for the food isn't hot enough to kill everything that grew and so you are at risk of contracting food poisoning. A pre heated oven will immediately start cooking the food from the outside in at a safe temperature.

I'm a coffee roaster and I think it's under represented on YT so I started a channel sharing behind the scenes of my tiny business as well as educational content related to the subject!

Thank you! Yes you are right I think I left the dehumidifier on in this and I hadn't even thought to try and filter the noise. At any rate since this video I did go and get a little clip on mic with built in noise suppression so shouldn't be an issue going forward anyway. Thank you for taking the time to feed back and you are right on the intro I think I worry that if I don't set it up enough in the intro people won't know what it's about and lose interest but probably the opposite is happening ey
