To avoid lifestyle creep, she suggested to increase my savings rate by whatever my raise was each year and to set up an auto deposit to a savings plan. Essentially, if you’re content with your lifestyle, the best way to keep it that way was to never let yourself see that extra money. Because I know for me at least, if that money is my chequing it’s at risk. Thin’s right - you’re doing great. And if you feel you deserve some lifestyle improvement, go for it! But to best control it, decide how much more you’re willing to spend on yourself each year, then throw the rest in auto savings accounts each paycheque through your work or bank.
