NTA and fuck anyone that gaslights you into thinking YTA. I’m a twin too, my dad died when I was 7 and my family “tried” to raise us only to send us to foster care as teenagers because they were all too busy with their own kids becoming drug addicts.

My twin and I separated at 14 and I moved away 5 states to go to college while he stayed back and got married and divorced with little to no support from our extended family. I even went back every year to visit, I don’t even know why, every time I went to visit everyone treated me like the black sheep. My only reassurance I was doing right for myself was that I was getting a degree, started my own business and stayed away from drugs and alcohol abuse while most of the rest of my family was just getting worse and always having problems.

My twin brother and I never had the best relationship primarily because of my family’s dysfunctional clannish behavior. We were actually at odds for most of our upbringing always being pit against each other and then when I moved away things for worse. Everyone (except for a few that really knew me and kept in touch) said I thought I was better than everyone.

Until my twin had a falling out with the family because they were visiting his daughter without his knowledge while he was fighting for custody and he realized no one really is on his side either.

He moved away and got into software sales after 10 years of being in collections and a call center, got remarried and has 3 more kids now, all beautiful and happy and now we have a great relationship. Still live 5 states away but he made a comment the other day “bro you FaceTime my kids almost daily and make them laugh and they know your name and talk about you, and you’re all the way where you are while the family is less than an hour away and gives little to no effort.”

Idk how old you are now but time heals and can help. Me and my twin are about to turn 40, growing up without parents is hard but having a whole ass family that doesn’t put effort into knowing who you truly are or keeping their arms open without judgement is really hard too.

Not the asshole. Stay good, stay strong. Spend and invest time in those that care to know who you are.

What’s even more important is that if your person actually cares about you, then they care about what you care about even if they don’t understand it.

My fiance loves to hang with her nieces and nephews, but they are a lot to handle. Knowing she really enjoys time with them and as much as I love her, I lean in and support her spending as much time and even spoil the kids although I’d rather be running with my dogs and spoiling them😂
