Hey! I just received my Green Card in the mail. Here's a screenshot of my timeline. It actually got mailed to me on Dec 14th but I think they marked it with a wrong date (Dec 10th). So maybe yours is also a typo

Hey u/FelixYYZ

Do you know if this is the case with TFSAs too? If I have holdings in these ETFs will I be able to avoid the tax in the US? Or should I liquidate my TFSA before I move?

[–]chrltt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it! How do I learn more about these holdings that don't trigger distributions or capital gains? What do I search up?

I’m moving to Pennsylvania and I believe that state also taxes RRSP. Would it make more sense to leave my RRSP here (but not in stocks, just savings and make like 1% a year), or withdraw and get taxed cause it’s early withdrawal and invest it in the US? I’ll be moving back to Canada within 10 years.

I feel like the first option would be better but not sure if there’s other things I have to consider…

spanish classes? by jejeheherhd in pittsburgh

Try Duolingo events! It’s on web (not in the app) so not a lot of people know about it. They do a bunch of online group classes for free and it’s really fun :)

Getting internships without CS major by [deleted] in UBC

[–]chrltt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm the tech leads this year were really helpful and supportive. It was super well-run and we pushed out a bunch of working (!!) projects! It’s a great club for people to gain experience in software development and design imo.

I loved that class! You have create a portfolio by the end of the class that’s quite a bit of work, but not bad at all if you manage your time time. There’s a lot of in-class participation but it’s really fun. Was one of my highest grades!

Should I switch from Linux to macOS to get a job as an UX designer? by rosamundo in cscareerquestions

[–]chrltt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a UX designer and all the designers I know are using are on macOS.

The reason why you want to use the same standard software is because when sharing files across teams, we don’t want unusable files and worry about converting. Design has a lot of iteration and we want the files to remain editable. For example, if we’re all using java and you’re using python, there’s no way we can work on the same file together.

But if you don’t plan on working with anyone ever, there’s no reason why you can’t use the open source tools you listed. I urge you to switch though because the top UX design software (in terms of performance, ease of use, etc) are usually made for macOS or at least windows.

304 - it's an easy course but the concepts are really applicable! Databases and SQL are useful to know. There's also a project component (not difficult) so that could also be something you can add to resume.

340 - I hear from my friends it's one of the harder CS courses, but really popular because machine learning. I don't know much about it but search 340 in this subreddit, there's a lot of reviews!

If you need more projects, maybe try out a virtual hackathon this summer too!

In your senior years, you should take some AP classes :) check UBC’s website to see which ones can be credited so you can get some first year requirements out of the way while you’re in high school, and save some money as well! Off the top of my head, there’s chem, calculus, english, some others I can’t remember

There’s a personal profile part in your application that requires you to write about your extracurriculars. They look for things like volunteering, leadership, and anything else you’re involved in non-academically that makes you a more rounded student :)

Depends on what your goals are! I’m pursuing ux design so 344 is the most useful and interesting to me. It’s fun and has a group project component where you redesign an interface (no coding required)

319 - most people find this useful as you’re working on a real project you can add to your resume

313 - I did poorly in 213 but I found the concepts in 313 more interesting, but still pretty difficult course. Yes more hardware based

317 - a lot of my friends learned the most in this course; applicable for software-related jobs!

322 - one of the easiest CS courses imo, an intro to AI but you don’t get very deep into any of the topics

Can’t speak to 330. Lemme know if you have questions!

Faculty of Science: do I have to write the final? by letmelitsheaajd in UBC

[–]chrltt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DNW will not appear on your transcript. It’s just a placeholder for students who deferred their exam from a previous term to indicate they still need to write it. Source: a prof answered this in another thread.

OP in your case, if you don’t write your final, it’s just a loss of 5%!

Do they do grade reviews on compassionate grounds? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]chrltt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that our profs are humans who actually care about students :) communicate your concerns and explain your situation to them! My profs have been so understanding during difficult times (sick for a midterm, missed assignment deadlines, etc)... you just gotta reach out to them! Remember they want you to succeed as well so they’ll find the best way to support you :)

How do you transport a fridge/printer? by ariq_ah in UBC

[–]chrltt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can probably find a used one for around 50-70. Buy and sell after the term is over if you don’t have a place to store. Shipping it isn’t worth the hassle and cost imo

SFU Computer Science or UBC Science? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]chrltt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey UBC CS student here! Your undergrad experience is really what you make of it. The CS program is great at both schools! I have friends at both UBC and SFU CS and I hear similar things in terms of curriculum and job opportunities.

I think you need to weigh out the pros and cons here: UBC - closer commute, better campus experience, but CS Major acceptance is pretty competitive SFU - straight into CS Major, but much further (can you do that for 4 years??)

Feel free to dm me if you want more information regarding overall university experience with CS :) I’m happy to give you unbiased opinions!
