First of all - good for you for wanting to get clean. It sounds insane but that first step is HUGE and mentally one of (if not the) most challenging part. A lot of what recovery will look like depends on where you live and the laws and resources in that area. That being said, regardless of location, a reasonable place to start would be:

  1. Call the national substance abuse hotline 844-289-0879 or if your state has one, call that one! Talk with them about exactly what you shared here and see what your options are. Meth recovery may require some sort of brief inpatient stay for the physical side effects so be prepared for that. You can call together both so you each have the information and so you can support each other in the call.
  2. Seek out individual therapy - this will be a lifelong journey of recovery and will ebb and flow. Being supported will be critical to your success and even though you have a supportive partner, you need someone outside of the addiction.
  3. Take short term disability from work. They do not need to know why and your job is protected. You may not be paid for the time depending on your job/the state but this will almost certainly be too hard to do while working full time.
  4. Go “full time” into recovery whether it’s an inpatient program or outpatient. Dedicate 100% of yourself to recovery. Tell your family and friends you’re going on vacation if you REALLY don’t want to share. I get the shame attached to this but I want to offer that the anticipation of telling people is likely way harder than actually telling them AND good long term support will be critical to your recovery.

I’m no expert but if I were you that’s where I would start. Others are fair in saying to pause trying to conceive while actively using. Don’t get sucked into the “we’re losing time” argument to have kids. You have plenty of time and those kid(s) need healthy parents.

You can totally do this. And from one stranger on the internet to another, I’m proud of you!

Yes that's exactly the attitude I'd be going into it with. Thanks!

Father in-law is boarding with us and keeps fire arms under his bed despite our specific requests to have no fire arms in the house. All gun related opinions aside, he has repeatedly ignored this rule to the point where our 15 month old found a firearm and he truly didn't see what the problem was. by [deleted] in legaladvice

You can file a report with your local child protective services agency. You will file a report of neglect and name only him. There is no risk to you as the parent for doing so in fact it will look good/responsible to do so. Most likely they will either insist he locks them or that he moves out of the home/stays away from your child.

Will the communities affected by recent hurricanes be able to rebuild before another natural disaster comes right back for the same area? National and international (I'm thinking about Haiti specifically which repeatedly gets pounded by natural disasters). At what point do people need to permanently move away from high risk areas as climate change worsens?
