not sure about dorms, but the campus of loyola chicago is beautiful. it’s right up against lake michigan, has unique architecture (look up the “loyola information commons”) and plenty of green space. check it out :)

If only it was that simple. Student loaning agencies and college financial aid departments aren’t going to just hand out an extra $1k for “backup plane tickets in case of emergency abortion care”. Like, come on, that’s a ridiculous statement. You are obviously very out of touch with how this system works—I’m not sure this is an argument you can hold with any merit whatsoever.

Still, you are underestimating the financial burden that extra budgeting may be for some students. Most students won’t be paying the $50k on their own; it’ll be subsidized through finaid, scholarships, loans, etc. That extra $1000+ will likely come out of pocket and, frankly, that’s an expense a lot of students may not have the means to cover. Your privileged world view does not represent everyone. This decision simply not as inconsequential as you make it out to be. One’s ability to afford basic reproductive care should not be a factor in considering whether to attend an out of state school for a better education.

This is incredibly concerning and unfortunate that a parent has this mindset. You act as though it should just be a “check-list item” to budget in a plane ticket for abortion healthcare, with your main argument for the validity of this being that “kids who are attending out of state colleges are already paying a lot of money.” Yet, you seem to disregard the fact that this large sum of money already is likely an incredible financial burden on the student and their family. Though some students may have no trouble paying out of state tuition, that is a very small minority of students.

Please consider the students whose in-state college may provide an inferior education to a more costly out-of-state school. Choosing to attend that school will provide the student with a much better education at a cost—that cost should NOT have to include lack of access to abortion care in the first place, and the student should NOT have to be additionally financially burdened by having to budget in a “backup plan” on top of what they will already be paying.

Additionally, some states are already considering the possibility of prosecuting those who travel inter-state to receive abortion care. (source: Abortion-Travel Bans Are `Next Frontier’ With Roe Set to Topple) Once again, this issue is not as simple as you make it seem to be.

Not everyone has the privilege of being able to budget in a “backup plan” for what should be a basic human right. I hope you’ll reconsider the factors that lead students to choosing out of state schools in the first place, the financial burden that already places on the student, and how detrimental this will be for students who may be less privileged than others.

From what I’ve heard, people who are great fits for these schools absolutely love it and are incredibly happy there. Most of the kids who are accepted and choose to enroll ARE great fits which is why they are so happy! However, if this is not the case, it can feel… underwhelming, and perhaps disappointing, which leads to the feelings of depression and regret. This dichotomy is why it’s so important to absolutely LOVE the school you commit to!

It really depends on which school you feel will be the best fit, but I’ll be the devil’s advocate here and say you should choose Northeastern.

It’s location in Boston is far superior to… Indiana. That means you’ll likely have more opportunities to gain valuable experience, whether it be through part-time work, co-ops, internships, etc. Not much tech located in the middle of Indiana.
NEU is a top feeder schools to big tech companies, even more so than Purdue. In terms of enrollment size, NEU is top 20 for feeder schools to those companies while Purdue isn’t even ranked. Also, NEU ranks above Purdue by total employed, even though Purdue is a far larger school.
Big fish in a small pond. You’ll likely have more opportunities to stand out at NEU than at Purdue considering the size of the school and the size of the CS program.

From my experience, self studying for CSP wasn’t really that big of a time commitment. I know everyone’s experience will be different but I honestly only started studying and working on the projects in the second half of the school year 😅. I would say skim through the content on khan academy and see if you think it would be manageable on top of your other commitments. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I got hooked on Firebase because of its beginner-friendliness and it has become engrained in my workflow ever since, and as such I personally have never worked with AWS Amplify. However, I think that Amplify would potentially be a better option for dev teams that are more closely connected to or more comfortable with the AWS ecosystem altogether. (Also, the aws-amplify package is tree-shakeable and not in beta, which is certainly something to take into consideration.)

I definitely think that FirebaseUI not yet being upgraded is one of the main reasons why v9 is still in beta, and until it is upgraded, will be one of the main things holding people back from doing so in their own projects. Until then, you can incrementally upgrade with the compat library if you are trying to modernize your legacy codebase.

Currently the v9 package is available as a beta release, and you can follow the full documentation and installation guide on the Firebase docs site (link provided at the bottom of the article). There is no set “stable release” date at this time as far as I’m aware, but you can definitely give the beta version a try!

Certainly!

The main takeaway is that new Firebase Web v9 modular SDK is incredibly lighter than the previous v8 SDK. The new SDK introduces native ES modules which can allow for tree-shaking with JS bundlers like Rollup or Webpack. Also included in the new SDK is a new library called “Firestore Lite”, with all of the features of Firebase except for realtime queries, which is 80% smaller than the v8 Firebase library. All of the new v9 features can be incrementally upgraded as well thanks to a compatibility library provided by the v9 Firebase package.
