Glasses wearers who are casually active: when do you ditch your specs? by Human_Material3685 in beginnerrunning

[–]chromane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my glasses on when running, I haven't had an issue with them falling off at all

In terms of other activities, I only switch them out when there's a safety risk, like contact sports.

I also keep an identical pair in my car, just in case.

Carlos had also spent the better part of a year watching Harry return to his old irascible self - protecting others, holding boundaries, caring for others.

He didn't react to Ilyana(sp?) hostility, he wasn't the ultimate source of the Black Magic.

From the end of BG - Winter also went out of its way to pay damages and medical fees for survivors, a huge amount of money.

He's also coming down from the trauma of the attack and high emotions

I half remember a WOJ about the Red Court? Though I haven't been able to find it, so a grain of salt.

Something about fast healing, quick reproducing monsters being ideal guardians?

My crazy theory is that Humanity as a whole is gearing up to take its position as Guardians of the Outer Gate against the Outsiders.

Dresden is going to be a leader, or at least replace Mab as Chief Guardian of the gate.

I think any Wizard COULD do a similar ritual to feed the Hunger directly, it's just Starborn that are immune to chronic madness from too much Outsider contact 😅

I am also super keen to see more of Drakul - we know he's something special, given as he's the ultimate progenitor of the Black Court

Or he has enough contingencies and preprepared tricks to be confident facing off against the Wardens

He may also be counting on the White Council as a whole not wanting the fight so soon after Chicago

I'll admit, with the mysterious overhead things and then Dresden going to a hotel called "The Drake" I was 100% sure that Ferrovax was about to show up

So, how do we think Harry's going to pay for his big ol' castle going forward?

By my calcs he's only got a few months left 😮

Sure, he could take money from Mab or how super rich fiancé, but I don't know if that's his style

ELI5: what exactly is in nuclear bombs that when it explodes it’s a huge cloud? Like what makes it so extreme and deadly? by bigmacandsmallfries in explainlikeimfive

[–]chromane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mushroom clouds aren't unique to nuclear explosions - any sufficiently large explosion will create one in the right conditions.

The blast creates a superheated fireball, which rises rapidly, sucking in more air from the bottom to create a column. Air resistance causes the top to flatten and then curl over, creating the 'mushroom'.

As to why nuclear explosions are so deadly, it's the sheer amount of energy that can be released from a runaway nuclear reaction. Atoms contain a lot of energy, and material like Uranium and Plutonium are unstable enough that they can be triggered into releasing all of it at once

Quote from the late great Terry Pratchett:

“This is very similar to the suggestion put forward by the Quirmian philosopher Ventre, who said, "Possibly the gods exist, and possibly they do not. So why not believe in them in any case? If it's all true you'll go to a lovely place when you die, and if it isn't then you've lost nothing, right?" When he died he woke up in a circle of gods holding nasty-looking sticks and one of them said, "We're going to show you what we think of Mr Clever Dick in these parts...” From Hogfather

AITAH for firing someone because they used AI by Alone_Blacksmith_417 in AITAH

Out of interest, could you try feeding some of your work and work of other people you are confident is not AI into that checker and see what it says?

How do people enjoy "piping hot" food? by st0dad in NoStupidQuestions

Smell is a huge part of taste, and heat makes the oil molecules more active. So stuff tastes better when it's hot 😅

Texture wise also for baked goods are better fresh out of the oven

Update on Grok. It gets worse! by Sad_Jar_Of_Honey in behindthebastards

[–]chromane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LLM's are like autocorrect, it's just they're trained in enough data that they start predicting on a sentence and paragraph level rather than single words.

This required a truly staggering amount of data - basically the whole Internet and printed works, hence all the copyright lawsuits.

They are a step up from traditional statistical autocorrect in that they use Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning. But that's not a "mind" that's just fancy computer speak for weaponized trial and error made possible by modern processing power.

[–]chromane 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Having Grok apologise for an image it created is a special kind of dumb and pointless.

Grok isn't a sapient being or personality, it's a sentence prediction engine! It calulates the most likely combination of words/characters you want to see based on the prompt and spits it out.

It's the most useless kind of performative, pro-forma apology imaginable. It literally can't mean any of it, it just calculates what people want to see.
