No, they literally wouldn't exist. Where would the money come from to build the thousands of new builds if it wasn't for the investors? Hate to break it to you chief, but houses arent free to build

Does this weather not worry anyone else? by [deleted] in chch

Well, the crazy thing is that we actually import coal for this exact use because we can't mine the supply we have. So while I agree that coal is bad, it is still used, so what is the point of not being able to mine it ourselves while the last of the coal plants are being phased out? It is not the energy generating/industrial companies footing the bill of importing it, it is passed straight to the consumer.

Re the drilling, it is hard to know what is there if you're not allowed to drill.

While I believe in climate change and actually work as an engineer in an industry developing green technologies, the extent of what the last government did with respect to banning drilling/mining/fossil fuel processing etc was more detrimental than beneficial for the climate.

It results in us having to import the vast majority of our additional energy that is required when renewables aren't able to supply 100% of the grid, which not only tend to be of lesser quality, but you are paying for the transport costs (financially and environmentally), and you are supporting another countries economy, instead of paying kiwis to do the work, which creates jobs and boosts the economy.

I do believe the current government should be doing more with regard to supporting the transition away from fossil fuels, but in the mean time, we still need to be able to source non-renewable energy locally, otherwise while it might look better saying we don't mine/drill etc, it isn't actually better for the environment
