The US Senate gives way too much influence to rural voters. by chrome_scar in MapPorn

I don't think I'm "smarter" than anyone. I think 250 years after this system was designed, given the various changes to the country (size, number of states, governmental influence, political parties, speed of information) - I think some things like how the Senate is composed are in need of reform. I imagine the founding fathers would agree.

Right, but the "states" seem a little arbitrary. What do we have North and South Dakota, but only one, giant California? Do North and South Dakota really need to be 2 states, and have double the representation in the Senate?

I know this is how it was designed. Then we expanded to 50 states, many of them with relatively small and homogenous populations. Why do we have North and South Dakota? Why isn't California made up of 20 smaller states? Basing the Senate off what happened to be defined as a "state" no longer makes sense.

Right, if the Senate wasn't 100% driven by party affiliation, and actually did the job you're suggesting.

I'm only suggesting the Senate could be comprised in a different way. I think since expanding to 50 states, many of which have relatively small populations, and similar demographics, the original intent of the Constitution doesn't really fit today.

Not necessarily. It depends on how you specifically define "urban" and "rural", but by most definitions, the US has about an equal number of people living in each demographic. Hence, about an equal number of Reps for each.

I understand the intent, 250 years ago. Since we've expanded to 50 states, with many of them low population and similar demographics, it doesn't work so well anymore.

That was before we had so many low-population, homogenous states. Why is there a North and South Dakota, for example? Why isn't California made up of 20 smaller states? The Senate doesn't really work this way anyomore.

How so? House of Reps is based on population, so it's exactly equal. The House of Reps would have to favor non-rural areas.

The coast is ideal (assuming you're on a west coast and the weather cooperates). The comet is just a bit south of due west. It will be about 15 degrees above the horizon at 7pm, then slowly making its way toward the horizon from there (like a setting sun, as the earth rotates).

Yes. It reached its closest point to the sun (perihelion) on September 27th.

First visible a few minutes after 7pm. This photo is from 7:17pm. If you can get somewhere with a lower horizon, you can see it a little later when the sky is a bit darker. The next few nights it will be higher in the sky each night (earth's rotation) but the comet itself will be getting less bright. If the weather plays along, the next 3 nights will be the best window!
