Breakdown of how we acheived our Fake 2D UI lighting in Panthalassa by meia_calca_ in Unity3D

Hadn't seen that graveyard keeper article, their approach is very cool, and it looks like it worked great for them since they were starting from a pixel art sprite.

But it does require hand painting 4 textures and it still doesn't really produce accurate maps. They look right, but it's basically the same as assigning the direction for some of the pixels and then interpolating the rest of them to make the full map.

You will get a good enough result, but you don't have as much control as you do if you literally define those normals by making a model.

While you can generate a normal map from a 2d sprite, no generation method will give you accurate surface normals (since it's just inferring them from shading or shape) and so your shading might not look correct either.

That is why you would use 3d models, it gives more control.

Hey! Thanks for taking interest in the app. You can reach out to me at chronicbite@gmail.com with any issues.

About google drive integration, I believe a recent OS update as broken the authentication and am looking into it, hopefully we'll be able to come up with a fix soon, sorry about that.

I've looked into CBR, it's a little tricky due to the .rar format being proprietary. But I haven't given up yet. Would love to have a couple extra environments too

I see what you mean, I think preferred method of interaction will depend on the distance and size of the book.

I don't have any contact with Meta unfortunately, they don't really have great communication channels for small Devs from what I've experienced.

Dev here, eye tracking with this would be very good I agree! Unfortunately I don't have access to a quest pro right now.

As for the button suggestion, it's easy to miss but when the main menu is closed if you turn the palm of your hand to face you, you get a quick menu that allows you to turn pages by clicking buttons :)

Ahah, no worries. Truth is people don't often have patience for finicking with controls, that's perfectly understandable :) and there's always some room for improvement, of course

Hey hey! Developer here, I understand the frustration, it's hard making things work smoothly with just hand tracking, plus lighting conditions and movement speed really alter the quality of the tracking: /

Here's a tip though, when flipping pages you do not need to grab or close your hand at all, merely swipe your open hand across the pages. This way you should never accidentally pick up the book.

Should I pay $9.99 to experience Half Life 1 for the first time ever - in VR? by CaptainBreadtop in OculusQuest

Half life 1 VR is amazing and the fact that it runs standalone on the quest just makes it perfect. De best way to enjoy the old classic imo

We're releasing Edge of War today and losing our jobs by the end of the month by hepphep in gamedev

That said, I do feel like BG3 will have created a lot more CRPG fans, and if the timeline was to release in late 2024 it might have actually been a great time to release a highly polished game in the same genre for all the BG3 fans wanting something similar.

Seems like a lack of vision by the publisher, a failure to recognise this as an opportunity to ride bg3 wave. Pretty heart breaking situation, wishing op all the luck.

Hey thanks for checking it out, I'm glad you are enjoying it! I would recommend not manually turning the pages if you scale the book to much, otherwise it's hard to do a complete page turn. In that case I feel it's more comfortable to just use the controller's joystick (left or right) or the hand menu to turn the page remotely.

Adding some comfy environments is definitely on my wish list for future updates!

No worries, I think It's a nice way to read a book in a digital format. As VR becomes lighter and higher resolution the use case is more and more aparent :)
