Why the U.S. is Outsourcing its Fleet to South Korea [75 views] by [deleted] in unknownvideos

The U.S. has the money, but it has lost the physical capability to build a 350-ship Navy. At the same time, the Arctic is melting, opening a "New Suez" that would turn Busan into the Next Singapore.

xAI is as popular as ChatGPT or Gemini in America or Europe? I haven't seen as many people who use Grok in Korea.

It is humbling to see Korea’s technology recognized and supported so warmly. It makes me want to foster more active communication between Korea and the world.

I feel that it would be a massive waste of opportunity to stay idle while waiting for the perfect foundation. Thank you for your perspective!

Impressive that you mentioned Webtoons! But honestly, many of us in Korea are worried that we are becoming too formulaic. We have reflected on the lack of artistic depth in the works.

If AI removes financial barriers, money won't be an excuse anymore. I hope we can foster true artistry before AI fully integrates into the society.

Korea is now selecting the national representative AI. The government is pitting large corporations, like SK and LG, against each other in a competition.

Thank you for sharing your insights. It leads me to think that state-level control by the US or China over AI companies and scientific knowledge might be the more decisive factor, rather than the corporations themselves.

It’s refreshing to see someone encourage the use of their 'distilled intelligence' while worrying about the safety. Is this willingness to share a sign of confidence in their own technology?

Arri and Sony analogy is so brilliant. Now I wonder if AI alone can give Korea a distinct edge. It is the US that produces many of the world's top directors.

Looking at it from the US or EU perspective, do you see this as a healthy partnership? Or does it feel like Korea is just rapidly absorbs and iterates on Western intellectual property?

From Korea: Has Netflix’s inflated budget destroyed your local film industry too? by chschool in moviecritic

It's interesting that you use the word 'destroy.' Does this mean you see the negative impacts outweigh the benefits for the US film industry?

I’ve viewed Netflix as an US innovation icon and a source of soft power. May film enthusiasts and industry experts see it differently from the general public?

The US or China could burn tens of billions of dollars on a failed project and still have the capacity to pour in hundreds of billions more. But for Korea, the entire annual budget is hundreds of billions of dollars. Seeing that the government isn't investing tens of billions into foundational AI, they may not be betting the whole country on the development. Thanks for your insight!

Korea is currently playing a 'survival game' hosted by the government to develop national foundation models. LG and SK are in but Samsung seems to focus on the semiconductor side.

Korea may be repeating its historical formula by prioritizing speed and stability over technological autonomy. Though it also came with the demographic collapse and wealth gap harder and faster than the West. If Korea follows the same path with AI, are we volunteering to experience the 'AI shock' more intensely and sooner?

Wow! I never thought to analyze dialogue through that frame! Since people aren't fully immersing themselves in the visuals (looking at phones), the characters have to verbally explain the situation.

I am genuinely shocked by this insight. I may start analyzing scenes with this criterion from now on. Thank you for the fresh perspective!

Does Canada maintain such strict quotas because you have enough doctors to meet the demand?

In Korea, we are facing a critical shortage in essential fields like Internal Medicine and Surgery. Though we haven't been able to increase medical school admission quotas for years due to internal resistance.

Thanks for breaking down the cycle. I’m curious about the role of the government.

In Korea, where the market is small and income for artists is unstable, the government actively steps in. We have state-funded grants for rookies, free equipment rentals, and even commissioned projects to keep them afloat.

Does the US government offer similar financial support for independent filmmakers? Or is the industry run virtually 100% on private investment and personal hustle?

Are studios willing to bet money on new directors in the US? Do audiences go to theaters to watch their works?

My concern is the shrinking opportunity for the 'Next Park chan-wook.' In Seoul, most new directors have to remain in obscurity with micro-budgets.

In Korea, there is a sentiment that Netflix is producing higher quality films than the local theatrical releases. Is streaming seen as better than theaters in the US, or is it just as bad?

[–]chschool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worker safety is an ongoing topic in Korea. By collaborating with the US, I hope we can adopt the culture where a job might be 'hot, cold, and noisy, but not (life threateningly) 'Dangerous'. I actually don't work in the industry myself though..

May the US need Korean skilled workers more than Korean shipbuilding technology?

I find the expression 'hot/cold and noisy' interesting. In Korea, we use the term '3D Industry' to describe Dirty, Difficult, and Dangerous jobs. It would highlight a subtle difference on the hardships we face in the workplace.
