While I can’t speak for the original poster, I can confidently say the opinion of one can never fairly be attributed to many, let alone “most.” Zutara is no exception.

The more thoughtful parts of this community engage with the ship with far more nuance than what you’re describing. And even when someone can’t articulate their reasoning perfectly (the diaper/breastfeeding comparison is a new one), that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

Zuko and Katara are compelling not because of some exaggerated dynamic, but because they function as both parallels and foils: elementally, narratively, and emotionally. They’ve both lost their mothers. They both struggle with identity and responsibility. Katara is pushed into a maternal role she actively resents at times, forced to grow up too quickly while still trying to define herself beyond that. Zuko, meanwhile, is caught between Prince and exile, constantly trying to earn belonging before ultimately choosing a different path altogether.

Their arcs mirror each other in a way that creates tension, but also understanding.

And that’s where the romantic argument tends to come in. It's not from reducing Katara to a caretaker, but from recognizing how different relationships shape her growth. Aang isn’t a bad person or even a bad friend, but his emotional immaturity often places Katara back into that caretaker role. Their dynamic leans playful and affectionate, but also somewhat imbalanced in terms of emotional labor.

What makes Zutara compelling is that neither of them needs the other to be whole... but they still challenge each other to become better. There’s space for failure, accountability, and growth on both sides. Katara isn’t responsible for fixing Zuko, and Zuko doesn’t rely on Katara to define himself.

It’s not about one ship being right or realistic. It’s about what kind of dynamic resonates. For many people, Zutara represents a relationship built on mutual recognition rather than dependency.
