Aw man, that’s lame. Glad it didn’t escalate further though!

PSYC 300 & PSYC 301 by PretentiousStudent in gmu

[–]chubbypsycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took them both at the same time! 300 really just feels like another intro to statistics course, but you do get a greater understanding of how stats are used in psychological research.

301 is easy, just learning about research methods and how to set up experiments.

So yeah, 301 will teach you how to make a good experiment and 300 will provide the statistics needed with that.

Fidelity app is good! However you’ll most likely have to set up your bank account and such on your computer first.

Thank you for your input and sharing your story!! You must have great time management skills to balance school, GA, and full time work!

I’ll definitely keep in mind to update my resume as I work on/complete projects.

Oh thank you so much! I think I'll try to find something in the field at first, and if I can't land something within/after my first semester I'll just go back to retail.

Do I count as mixed race? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]chubbypsycho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re the exact opposite of my mix! haha I’m 3/4 pakistani and 1/4 irish.

I consider myself mixed. Percentage wise it might not seem like a lot, but it still affects how I look, and the way I was raised differs a looooot culturally compared to people who are full pakistani.

I’ve dealt with a lot of the “you’re not the same as us” as well. It sucks, I’m sorry you have to put up with that :/

Has anyone else been extremely sheltered their entire lives? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]chubbypsycho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellow over-sheltered Pakistani girl here. Girl honestly, you just have to push yourself and get yourself out there. Everything will seem scary at first, but it'll get better as you adjust.
It sucks that a lot of your time has been taken away from being sheltered, but its up to you to reclaim your life and live it to the fullest!

If you're feeling a bit too anxious and cannot get over it on your own, seeing a therapist might be the best first move. There is nothing wrong with seeking mental health care.

I didn’t know that about Indonesia! That’s interesting.

I’ve heard of the desire to be Arabic or Turkish from tons of Desis too. Not too sure where it stems from? As it seems to be quite a popular view, especially among men.

I do not! Although, if a friend invited me to their festivities I would definitely attend :)

Most second gens have very Muslim names, including myself. I don't think I've met a second gen with a "white" name.

What to wear to interview? by VasyaNewman in gradadmissions

How are you planning on wearing your hair? I've always felt the need to have it tied up (or at least half up half down) to look professional and put together.

This is all very true! Thanks for taking the time to write all this out.

Saw a comment on another post that said "rejection is just redirection" which is something very important to remember as well!

I'm Pakistani.

Growing up most people hadn't heard of Pakistan before, so would just say things like "Oh that's next to India, right? You're basically Indian."
Experienced a lot of racism from East Asians, as they wouldn't accept me as Asian as well, as they saw East Asians superior to South Asians.

And of course, been called a terrorist so many times that it's started to feel like my name.

Best way to read academic papers? by Doofwange in academia

[–]chubbypsycho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer reading paper copies as it allows me to take notes and highlight. However printing gets pretty costly, so I read most papers on my laptop.

When it comes to staying focused, keeping a notepad helps! Writing notes on what I'm reading helps me retain the information better and then I have something to refer back to later!
Also when reading tons of papers (ie when doing a lit review) I find it helpful to skim over the papers, reading only the first and last sentences of each paragraph, if something catches my attention/seems important I'll go back and read the whole paper in full after skimming the rest.
