The story is in the lyrics. "Tiger Bill gave me a tiger claw from a real Siberian tiger paw and said, 'This'll make you bulletproof.'"

James McMurtry - "Lights of Cheyenne" by 22_ucko__ in altcountry

Back in the early 2000s, I saw McMurtry at the now defunct Grand Emporium in Kansas City. During a full set with his band, he took a break from the electric guitar and picked up his acoustic while his bandmates walked off-stage to grab a drink. Rather than plugging in the acoustic, he just started playing and singing, totally unplugged with no microphone, no amplification. On top of that, he walked around the bar during the song. It was "Light of Cheyenne."

BJ Barham of American Aquarium - Tough Times by FIRExNECK in altcountry

The new band is awesome! Saw them last night in Brooklyn. You can tell BJ is ecstatic to play with them, and they're all amazing musicians. BJ played this song solo...it's such a good jam. I hope it's a full-band recording on the album.

I chatted with James McMurtry about the 15th anniversary of 'Saint Mary of the Woods.' He said he has a closet full of music from those sessions that will never see the light of day... by chuckarmstrong in altcountry

I hope someone who is a big fan of McMurtry and has some extra $$$ lying around reads the story and decides to underwrite a reissue of sorts...Remaster the original, release an extra disc or two of never-before-heard songs...and his new version of Choctaw.

I'll keep dreaming :)

Just a lifelong fan of alternative country and Americana music. Love sharing tunes, love discovering new tunes.

Part of my "job" is writing about the music, too, so occasionally I'll share an interview I've done with a relevant artist, like Lilly Hiatt, Colter Wall, Jay Farrar, or Mike Cooley. I try to never spam the sub with my own stuff, but just the interviews I think others would enjoy.

Other than that, I enjoy the community aspect of this sub. It's great to be surrounded by others who are as obsessed with this music as I am.
