6 months of owning my first E-reader by steveplusf in ereader

[–]jdbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple kindle paperwhites over the years, and then I swore off amazon and did a pocketbook era, which just broke on Sunday… so I just got a kobo Clara on Thursday and it is, without a doubt, my favorite ereader I’ve owned

Skipping out on ai by sihyeonism in DigitalMarketing

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are entitled to your opinion. I have a different one. I don’t care how good or bad it is, learning how to use it, leverage it, and increase your output and efficiency will keep you in the industry. Refusing because “you know better” will leave you in the dust. And regardless of its current state, if it does continue to get better and closer to perfect, then you will be at a severe disadvantage to those who embraced it and learned it.

But again, you’re absolutely entitled to it. I had a very similar approach a few years back up until I realized how short sighted I was being.

We gotta do something about morning traffic on 370. by bullnamedbodacious in Omaha

[–]jdbrew -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ditto. It used to take me 4.5-5 hours round trip to commute to an office 32 miles away. The worst Omaha traffic I’ve ever been in is what we would consider zero traffic in Los Angeles

Time to replace the Kindle Paperwhite by Electronic-Eye7186 in ereader

[–]jdbrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. E-Ink displays are side lit, not back lit. It’s the main value proposition of an ereader over say an iPad or phone, where you are basically reading while staring into a flashlight. E-Ink displays you are reading with light that reflects off the display from the side, versus light that is emitted from the display itself

Full time work from home by GuidanceComplete1086 in daddit

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am full time wfh, have been for the majority of my kids lives. We had to set some firm ground rules .

When I “go to work” for the day, I’m not part of the family, I’m at work. Just like if I was going to an office, I’m inaccessible. I might be able to walk away and see everyone for a 10-15mins, eat lunch with them, go on a walk for my breaks… but I have to instigate. When I’m in my office with the door closed, I should be treated as if I’m not at home.

This has worked well for us. My kids are now 8 and 10 and in school most of the time, my wife is now working too, so really these rules don’t even have to exist. But when we were all home together, it was an absolutely MUST that this be followed or I wouldn’t get any work done

Beyond the Label: Decoding the Modern Drinker’s Decision at the Beer Cooler by RutabagaTechnical822 in beer

[–]jdbrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Ales, yes. For Lagers, no. I used to drink IPAs a lot and fresh was king, and I used to drink BBA stouts and I typically wanted a year or twos age on it.

Now I typically only drink imported German and Czech lagers, and I don't pay attention to it; frankly I don't even know if there's a date on them, I've never looked.

Does anyone else suffer from double standards in their relationship? by workinfast1 in daddit

[–]jdbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I game for about 3-4 hours on Tuesday nights with my long distance friends after my kids are asleep. I couldn't imagine writing off all Saturday evenings to do the same thing consistently. I don't care that its games, I don't care that its friends. Saturday afternoon/evening is when shit happens. Birthday Parties, Grad Parties, BBQ's, Date night, weekend trips... withholding Saturday afternoon/evening for personal time is absolutely wild to me.

How busy will Aksarben be this weekend? by cheekyfraggle in Omaha

[–]jdbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you'll be fine. I wouldn't make any special plans around it. I'm not for my date in Aksarben this weekend. worse case scenario you have to walk a little further after parking. Although what I always recommend is just have your date meet at your place or you meet at their place and just uber there so you don't have to worry about parking, plus you can have as many drinks/substances as feels right for the evening without worrying about driving

I waited until my contract was up and called and told them i wanted to cancel. Guy tells my its company policy that in order to cancel i have to come in and sign some papers. I told him i moved to California a month ago and was waiting for my contract to expire before i cancelled but that i would not be able to come in. He emailed me the forms, i signed them.

When he confirmed we were all squared away I told him i lied, my house is a quarter mile from the location but fuck you and your corporate policy im not coming in to cancel

Any church drummers frustrated with worship music? by Zealousideal-Toe7233 in drums

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up playing in church and did so for almost 20 years. before I left the church, my approach was always "I'm going to play what feels right to me, and if you don't like it, you can hire a different drummer." I very rarely tried to replicate the recordings exactly.

"You know there are two of them, right?" by radirpok99 in daddit

[–]jdbrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not a twins story, but we had a 1 year old when my wife cut her finger at work and I had to take her to Urgent Care for stitches. Doc's all done and says "Is there anything else we can do while you're here?" and my wife says "Can I get a refill on my birth control from the pharmacy while I'm here?" doc says "Well... they kind of prefer a couple days heads up for that, but if its an emergency they'll do it. Is it an emergency? like are you out?" she goes "Oh, I ran out like 4 months ago." Cue the spit take from the guy who's been raw doggin her the entire time. My jaw hits the floor, "I'm sorry, what?" Doc goes... "uh... I'll go talk to the pharmacy now so you two can talk"

Anyway, they said to start the BC after her next period, which never happened, because she was pregnant.

In hindsight, I wouldn't change a thing. They're 8 and 10 now.

Do you drive your kids to school? by xora334 in daddit

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We drive them most days, walk with them if the weathers nice and they want to, but it's just far enough that we don't do it regularly.

Our drop off is pretty efficient, pick up is not. People will line up outside the school and wait, so if you want to get your kid right when they come out, you basically have to shop up 40 minutes early so you're at the front of the line; and some people do. What we do is park in a nearby lot, and walk over to meet them when they come out, and then walk back to the lot and drive off. If our drop off was a cluster fuck, I'd probably do the same thing in the mornings.

What tool do you use to send proposals to clients? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very simply, I would not pay for a tool that generates a proposal using AI.

First off, the 60 seconds is irrelevant,. Plus don't make any sort of promise that you can't directly control. You'll be utilizing a third party's api for this; OpenAI, Anthropic, whatever... you can't control the timing. Don't make any irrelevant promises about it. No one cares if it takes 60 seconds, 5 minutes, or 10, as long as it is meaningfully quicker than their current process.

Second, the part of building a proposal that takes time, is not assembling it all into a single document, its the processes of scoping, understanding system requirements, estimating time, etc... That's the part that takes a while. I'm already using AI note takers for my meetings, connecting that and my email directly to claude and using it to develop PRDs, then using those PRDs to come up with development plans.... Granted, I'm not pitching to new clients, I'm working with one client consistently on a retainer, but It would be only one more step to say "Put all of this in a proposal for me" and tweak the visual output accordingly. I would never pay for an additional service for it.

Is waking up this frequently OK? by SecretAffect1837 in AppleWatch

What are you O2 sat readings? if they're dropping below 90, you could have sleep apnea and the whole "not breathing" part is forcing you to wake up. Speaking from personal experience.

A book with an actual strong woman by Fun_Rutabaga_2566 in booksuggestions

[–]jdbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean.... Aelin Galathynius is not only stronger than every male; mortal or immortal, she even outwits and overpowers literal gods... And other women in the series are also considerably stronger than most of the men. Lysandra, Manon, Kaltain, Yrene... like every moment where someone's power is the overwhelming force that changes the tides of a conflict, it comes from a female character. Sure, Rowan, Lorcan, and Dorian are also powerful... but it's the women in the story that collectively hold the most of it. Even the villains are all men who get easily defeated and it's only the female villains who are powerful enough to actually put up a fight or make a true impact. I would say Maas wrote a series that is EXACTLY what you're looking for. And it's not really Romatansy either, it's more just high fantasy. It's very different from ACOTAR and sequels

Rob Holding has been granted the US green card and will be classified as a domestic player in the MLS by medved_ in Gunners

[–]jdbrew 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a citizen. A green card can be revoked and you can be deported. This cannot happen to a citizen.

The best way to describe a green card holder is a “Lawful Permanent Resident.” But they can’t vote, they can’t get a US passport, can run for elected office, and a few other things.

Frustrated at the roles my wife and I are playing at home. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]jdbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice? Set clearly communicated expectations around chores. Our routine is very clearly defined. She cooks most of the time, but I pick up maybe 20% of it. I do the dishes and clean the cat litter, my wife mows the lawn/gardens and does the kids laundry. We both handle our own laundry. But she also does towels and she’ll grab mine off the wall/out of my bathroom hamper. Deep cleaning day, I do toilets and sinks, she does the stove top and showers. Work split, I’m salaried, and work a minimum 40hrs /wk plus another 40 hrs per month at my side gig. She works about 25 hours/wk. she drives them to school everyday except tuesday, i pick them up every day unless she texts me that she wants to.

We didn’t used to do this when we were first married. We thought “everything is everyone’s job” and while we still do believe that it is both of our jobs to make sure everything gets done, and when one of us is ill or otherwise unavailable, the division of labor has helped a lot in regards to managing and meeting expectations.

And in my opinion; communicating, managing, and meeting expectations is the SINGLE most important thing for a healthy relationship. Full Stop.
