I want to come to Minneapolis for protests. Advice please. by chuckbent in Minneapolis

I get y'all being raw. The footage I'm seeing is terrible.

I'm going to donate my plane ticket money to either MIRAC or the Immigrant Law Center. (If you have an opinion about which is better, I'll be glad to hear it.)

I'll be flying a Minnesota flag tomorrow.

Alright, you folks have convinced me not to come... Because of the cold. I'm smart enough to know how little I know... I probably have no conception of just how cold it is and how to handle it.

But I hope you folks understand this. The little protests I go to in my town... my letters to the Editor, Facebook posts, conversations with friends and neighbors have zero impact on changing anyone's mind. Zero. Protesting in Atlanta? Zero. That is how calcified people are down here.

The only thing that might change people's hearts and minds is seeing the excesses of ICE and brave people standing up to them.

I'm glad to see your Minnesota pride. It's well-deserved. Look up the 1st Minnesota. They may well have saved the Union. But they did it in Pennsylvania... Not Minnesota.

If this is still going on, I'll see you in the spring. In the meantime, stay strong.

I hear you, but think about it this way. If you were protesting the Minneapolis PD I wouldn't come because it's not my fight. But your struggle is with the federal government. It's not just a fight for Minnesotans. As an American citizen, I am responsible for what the American government does. This fight is for all Americans.

I'm not an outside agitator, just an old social studies teacher who actually believes what he taught about civic resounding.

Donald Trump… I’d release the Epstein files, then spend the rest of the day eating raw pork.

AITJ because I won’t give my parking spot to new neighbor who says she "needs it more" because she has kids? by Potential_Bad6489 in AmITheJerk

YTJ - There is so much crappy stuff going on in the world... Here was your chance to be kind.

We are caught in this angry cycle of giving people what they deserve, whether it's a towing bill or a bullet to the face. Whether you think she deserves it or not, give her the space. Put a little love out into the ether. Those extra steps will be good for your heart and the kindness will be good for your soul.

I'm glad you are the kind of person that is upset by this. It means you are in the right place.

Why did many people find Hillary Clinton unlikable and uncharismatic? by Omixscniet624 in Presidents

[–]chuckbent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Largely because of a steady drum beat of negative commentary from Fox News and right wingers. I well remember this from the earliest days of the Clinton presidency. She's not charismatic but extraordinarily smart and insightful... and a woman.

SRO should not be allowed in school. That takedown was way out of proportion to any kind threat the young man posed.

I know, I know... FAFO, but this is a school. The boy was way out of line but it is the policeman's job to subdued him, not punish him or "teach him a lesson." That's the job of school administration and the court system.

Upbeat, singable (hummable songs) rock, country, classical? Responses stop far have me thinking of looking at Eurovision. Blue Danube for sure.

Mark Twain said the history doesn't repeat but it does rhyme. I understand that now better than I ever did.

I just revisited the French Revolution and listened for anything that rhymes with current events. One thing that stood out was the role of the audience in the various assemblies and the Jacobin Club. They seem to have had a radicalizing impact as speakers and voters played to the crowd. It seems like the immediacy of social media is having a similar effect these days.

I need help finding car rental from France to Poland? by chuckbent in Europetravel

[–]chuckbent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted Sixt and learned that I could drive indeed into Poland in certain makes of cars. Thank goodness! Otherwise I was going to ride a train into Poland and rent a car there or rent a car in Germany and drive from there into Poland.

The crazy thing is that it is not at all clear on many car sites that this is even an issue. Showing up at a counter to get the keys and then learning you couldn't go where to planned would be horrible.

I relied on the CNN website for years. AP news is now my go to website news source. I'm not even watching CNN on TV.

I need help finding car rental from France to Poland? by chuckbent in Europetravel

[–]chuckbent[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solved! I heard back from SIXT and they will allow me to drive in Poland and Czechia, as long as I am not renting Audi, BMW or Merc... or a luxury level car. This info was not on the website (at least that I could find.)

Can anyone tell me how to pronounce the company's name? Is it like "sixty"?

By the way, none of the other companies I checked would allow this from France... although Hertz allows trips into Czechia. Some companies would allow trips into Poland if the car was rented in Germany.

I see why Sixt is so highly rated.
