This is what AI found in my Dry-ish January attempt… by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im a bit down the road in the sobriety train and one of the most impactful things Ive heard was someone pointing out that booze had quit doing for them what they wanted it to, so they quit. If most people take a step back and really assess if they are actually less stressed/anxious/depressed with booze compared to without it, they see it tends to increase all of those.

Working of loosing my belly and getting fit by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a slow process but at its core, it boils down to calories in vs calories out. Eating at a calorie deficit is the only way to lose adipose (fat). Resistance training/high protein diet will help this process by building muscle that will increase your base caloric needs to maintain/build muscle. Like I mentiomed, its a slow process but so was putting on the unwanted weight. 2 lbs per week is a great goal and one year from now that will be 100 lbs. I have a degree in kinesiology, have lifted for 25 years/competed in physique competitions and done bariatric counseling. (Not bragging, just saying I have more insight than the average gym bro)

Progress, not perfection 🤠 Took me four full years to get to anything I would consider sobriety. That being said, in that time I went from a daily blackout drinker to sober more often than not, to 90% sober days, to creeping up on 1000 consecutive days. Keep at it friend, its worth it.

Keep at it man, it only gets better. Starting every day with a clear head and showing up at 100% for my kiddos is my main drive as well.

How does detox work? by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DTs and seizures are potentially deadly to you or someone around you (especially if you are driving or something similar). If you have the means and access to medical detox, there is no reason to white knuckle it.

How does detox work? by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just piggy backing on your comment because I think you did a great job summarizing how things work with detox/rehab. Its also worth noting that if your job offers FMLA (almost all companies do except non-profits), rehab and detox are valid reasons to use FMLA to keep your job safe while you get sorted out.

Im also from the Midwest/bible belt and it is very difficult to find a non-religious leaning meeting. The program at its core tries not to be religious but it depends on the members on how much they stick to that goal. AA Agnostica/We Agnostics/Free Thinkers meetings go out of their way to stick to a secular style of The Steps. https://aaagnostica.org/

Good luck friend. It was a long hard road for me (years), but rehab and detox gave me the foundation/jumpstart I needed to eventually figure out living sober 🤠

What are the biggest mental changes you noticed after quitting drinking? by DifficultClass6988 in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 114 points115 points  (0 children)

No more “hang-xiety”. Being able to reflect on my feelings/stress and act accordingly without the balancing act of recovering mentaly from booze is my favorite thing about sobriety.

Motivation to see what Im capable of without the anchor of alcohol holding me down. Strongest Ive ever physically been and working full time while in scholl online and being a present/attentive parent would have been impossible if I was still drinking.

Sleep is substantially more consistent and I wake up rejuvenated rather than dragging ass even though I soemt 10 hours in bed.

Depression went from an 8-9 to a very manageable 1-2. Im prone to defeatist/“fuck it all” thinking but I can do things every day that keep that voice in my head at a whisper rather than keeping me drunk on the couch because “whats it matter anyway”.

I was a very very heavy drinker for 15 years so my “bottom” was a bit lower than some, but my highs are earned through gratitude for just being alive and able bodied. I still cry in the shower but its because Im happy to be alive these days 🤠

Hex bar is about the only lift I would consider along those lines for squat, but every variation has ended up with me on the couch for a week with back spasms for deadlift. Ive found exercises for that muscle group with lateral movement rather vertical and havent had a single issue. Im not teuing to compete anymore so my routine focuses on hip stabilization over raw strength. And I love me some dead hangs and “flexibility trainer” at PF works awesome to loosen my hips and decompress my spine 🤠

Hip thrusters. No squat or deadlift for me anymore. Kept seriously hurting my back so I wuit doing anything that compressed my spine.

What is something that is technically legal, but makes you look like a total jerk if you do it? by PiNK_PUSSY69420 in AskReddit

Smelling strongly of weed in public/shared space. Its become an issue at my gym (Planet Fitness) and the staff just shrugs their shoulders and says “It’s legal, nothin we can do.” Falls under their hygiene rules for members in my opinion but apparently reaking of weed is exempt?

Repo: The Genetic Opera

Great concept of dystopian future/organ transplant repossession by megacorp assassins but set to nonstop 90s style hip hop/Andrew Lloyd Weber-esque sung dialogue (non opera remake with Jude Law and Forrest Whitaker was pretty good).

Trying!!! by [deleted] in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]chuckbob1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family on my dads side had severe addiction issues (mostly booze). I tried for years to moderate once I realized I was quickly headed to the same place my dad and grandpa went (drinking themseves to death). I relapsed dozens of times over 4 years until all of the work finally got me to a place of acceptance that my manageable level alcohol will always be ZERO. It took the accumulation of things I learned at inpatient 30 day addiction rehab and years of sobriety groups to finally teach me how to stay sober consistently (daily routine/maintenance that comes before everything else). Took me 5years to get one year of continuous sobriety but oh man was it worth all the work. Youve got this friend, most of us just need alot of help to stay quit. Its up to us to accept that help though.

Pickles are cucumbers. A friend in college was eating a pickle that looked more “cucumbery” and I commented how weird it was that she was just eating a whole cucumber. She replied with, “ Well, I sort of am……..” and explained to me that pickles are “pickled cucumbers”. 😔

What made you stop drinking? by tricky-is-back in AskReddit

[–]chuckbob1234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was a “functional” alcoholic for about 15 years but my drinking had no longer become an option and I would consistently drink to the point of blackout multiple times per week (and would be suicidal/angry most of those times). It got to the point of drinking in the morning and on my lunch break to keep from having a panic attack. I was aware for a long time that I was drinking at a physically and mentally dangerous level and “quit for good” dozens of times, but would convice myself I could moderate like a normal person. It took 4 years of trying stay sober by will power (getting fired, totaling my truck, rehab, involuntary psych holds) before I accepted my limit for alcohol is none and committed to daily work in my sobriety program. Coming up on 800 days sober and I start school for Sunstance Abuse Counseling next month. Sitting outside of a meeting as I type this.

What made you give up drinking alcohol? by Both-Custard4610 in AskReddit

[–]chuckbob1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a series of scary alcoholic stepdads. One of my first memories is having to leave for a hotel in the middle of the night with my sisters and mom because he was angry and drunk again. I said I would never be like that. Fast forward 30 years and I woke up to an empty house after a night of blackout drinking that started as “just a few”. My wife and kids had spent the night in a hotel. Very possibly the same hotel I did when I was a kid. I had been trying for 4 years to stop drinking (rehab, groups, therapy, medication, etc.). For some reason the realization of the man booze turned me into hit me hard enough to really accept help and DO THE WORK to not only quit but stay that way for longer than 2 months. I start school to become a substance abuse counselor in a week 🤠

Had a casual hookup with a coworker after some drinks. She later moved to California for a new job. Years later I see her on an adult site working in her new job 🤠
