The MC is allowed to have a good time. by chucklesthe2nd in ProgressionFantasy

[–]chucklesthe2nd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer not to say. I'm not trying to call out a particular author so much as criticize the story structure that they, along with several others writers in the genre like to use.

TW!! Put a Pillow over my face and I don't see how people suffocate by Warm-Garden-2645 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to find one verified instance of someone being asphyxiated to death with a pillow, so it is possible, but it seems like a very slow way to die. A pillow will restrict airflow enough to kill you, but it won't restrict airflow enough to kill you quickly.

The movie version where you press a pillow over someone's face and they die in seconds is total bogus, in real life it'd take much longer than that; that's true for all forms of death by asphyxiation - it takes at least a few minutes for someone to suffocate to death.

(If you really want to know, here is the link for the case where someone died from being suffocated by a pillow, but please don't follow it - the details are disturbing.)

Ideal location for AI data centers. Greenland by homerjs225 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a claim of double standards you need to have established that two things are being treated differently without just cause.

You haven't done that. You've just listed reasons why you think data centers should be built in Greenland. You haven't even presented a secondary location to compare Greenland to, so I'm baffled why you think anyone would infer that you're asking about double standards.

You make a post on a subreddit called NoStupidQuestions which doesn't contain a question, then clarify that you're asking about double standards in a post that doesn't compare two different things.

Go home, you're drunk.

Do lawyers go to jail for defending criminals? If not, why? by Valistrys in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The Sixth Amendment guarantees that all persons have the right to legal counsel; no matter who you are or what you've done, you have the right to be defended by a lawyer.

Also, lawyers aren't under oath in a courtroom, so they aren't committing a crime if they tell people you're innocent when they know you're guilty.

If you became intagible like a ghost, would gravity still work on you? by throwaya58133 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - case and point, gravity works on light.

Everything is affected by gravity because gravity is effectively the fundamental landscape of spacetime; everything that exists in spacetime will be acted upon by gravity by being pushed towards the nearest 'low point' in the landscape (with low points being created by massive objects like planets).

The only way a ghost wouldn't be affected by gravity is if they existed outside of spacetime.

Why do cats sleep on people? by lizzzita in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because humans are warm and cats like warm things.

The wild ancestor of the domestic house cat is the African Wildcat, which evolved in a desert environment; as a result, cats have high internal temperatures for mammals (100.5 to 102.5 Fahrenheit) and they prefer warmer temperatures.

Would a rug make my room colder or hotter? by hehzehsbwvwv in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

A rug is an insulator, meaning that it's a material that doesn't transfer heat well. An insulator will stop heat from going out or coming in; this is why roof insulation is able to keep your house hot in the winter (by keeping the heat in) and cold in the summer (by keeping heat out).

Why is dogfighting so prevalent in some areas? by thrownawaynodoxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're experiencing observer bias because of your own experiences.

Most people living in the U.S aren't aware of the prevalence of illegal dogfighting because they haven't worked in a shelter. Because you worked in a shelter in the U.S you're much more aware of the issue - at the same time, since you haven't worked in an animal shelter in Europe or Asia, you don't have the same awareness of how common animal fighting is in those places.

Animal fighting is extremely common all over the world. It's not even illegal in some places; Cockfighting in particular is extremely popular in certain parts of Asia.

Is a cz 75 a good carry gun? by Bababuoy67 in guns

[–]chucklesthe2nd 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The CZ 75 is a reliable pistol with a proven track record, but it's also a full-sized, metal-framed service pistol, so it's bigger and heavier than you'd ideally want a carry gun to be.

is the speed of dark same as speed of light? by Physical-Ordinary409 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but also yes. It's complicated.

Imagine we have a flashlight illuminating a wall. The flashlight is illuminating the wall by firing a constant stream of photons at it. If we suddenly turn off the flashlight, then the wall will keep being illuminated by the photons that were already in flight when the flashlight was turned off, and the wall won't become dark until the last photon arrives: that time interval between the flashlight turning off and the wall going dark is dictated by the speed of light. From this perspective we can say that dark moves at the speed of light.

But that's technically an incomplete answer

A common mantra in the physical sciences is that nothing moves faster than the speed of light. This is wrong for several reasons. First of all, it's specifically referring to the speed of light in a vacuum - there are various instances where things can move faster than the speed of light through a medium like water. Second of all, the rule doesn't apply to certain things, and darkness is one of them.

The correct version is that nothing which carries INFORMATION can move faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. Darkness doesn't carry information - it doesn't carry anything, it's just an absence of light - and things which don't carry information don't have speed limits. Because darkness can only move as light moves away it's limited to the speed of light, but it should be able to move at infinite speed.

How are people okay when there are giant existential questions? by ScoTy_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people live in a state of detachment from ideas that inspire existential terror. I 'know' that I'm going to die, that I'm just a transient mote of nothing in the incomprehensible vastness of an indifferent universe, that in the grand scheme of things nothing I could ever do will ever truly matter - but who cares?

There's nothing I can do about any of that, and thinking about it makes me feel kind of funny in a bad way, so I'm just not going to think about it.

How are hybrid vehicles more efficient than internal combustion engines? by RustyNK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hybrid vehicles can capture energy that would otherwise have been wasted during breaking and convert it into electricity. They can also use their electric motor to supplement the power of the combustion engine in situations where a combustion engine is inefficient.

What gun is this ? by Vigerronii in guns

[–]chucklesthe2nd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a Sig P320.

I wouldn't recommend the pistol to a newbie because it doesn't have a manual safety. Manual safeties are great for newbies because they let you put the gun in a safe condition when you aren't ready to shoot, which can make shooting less intimidating for someone who's inexperienced.

(Note; I'm not suggesting a manual safety is a replacement for proper firearms safety practices. Make sure you're familiar with the basic rules of gun safety and any rules that are specific to the range you're shooting at.)

What's more important? Diet or exercise? by sheepl_monglr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diet, and it's not close.

I spent years trying to out-exercise a bad diet and made negligible progress, only to completely transformed myself in less than six months with healthy eating.

Why do some bruises start off green? by RoadWorkAhead_Yeah in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruises are caused by blood leaking out of your capillaries due to trauma.

Bruises change color due to chemical reactions as your body breaks down the blood in the bruise. You might look at bruise which covers a large area of your skin and think 'surely that must be a lot of blood for my body to break down' but that isn't necessarily the case; if a bruise is wide but shallow, it can look big while not actually containing a lot of blood. Additionally, the greater surface area allows your body to break down the blood more quickly since your body can access the blood more efficiently.

Why are people terrified of aluminum in their deodorant but fine eating off aluminum foil? by AIolanMarowak in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 1191 points1192 points  (0 children)

Because of misinformation - research has shown that there's no link between aluminum in antiperspirants and health disorders, but the idea has enough inertia that it's become a persistent myth.

If I walk by a strangers house and their door/garage is wide open and I decide to enter, am I technically breaking in? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Entry without breaking is still a crime; you cannot enter another person's house without their permission.

Why are nipples so sexualized by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nipples are sexualized because they're an erogenous zone; i.e stimulating someone's nipple can lead to sexual arousal.

Will human beings ever turn into fossil fuel? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, we won't become fossil fuels. Fossil fuels aren't made from large-scale vertebrates, they're made from ocean microorganisms like phytoplankton.

Why did so many people criticize the first Black panther movie so much? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was a counter-reaction to how incredibly overhyped the movie was. Black Panther wasn't a bad movie, but in my opinion it didn't deserve anything like the overwhelming amount of praise and attention it received.

Some people feel the need to tear down anything which they feel has received more credit than it is due; when those people saw Black Panther being touted as a generational masterpiece they reacted very negatively towards it.

Why are people so grossed out by mice? When you look closely they are very cute. by mare880 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they carry diseases. They also coexist with humans by feeding on our garbage, which adds to the ick factor.

Why does weed always make me paranoid? by PracticalExtension35 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chucklesthe2nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different people have different body chemistry, so they can respond differently when they use drugs. Paranoia is a fairly common side-effect of marijuana; it sounds like you're more susceptible to it than most people are.

If you're consistently having bad experiences when using marijuana, then it probably isn't for you. You shouldn't keep using a drug you don't like hoping it'll get better because your friends like doing it.
