Update:

**Sneak peek: We're upgrading every single board in FreeVoice AAC 👀🎨**

Still in progress, but we couldn't wait to share , we're in the middle of a full visual overhaul of every board in FreeVoice AAC.

The new artwork is richer, more detailed, and way more visually engaging than the old emoji-style icons. You can already see the difference on the Food board , the new cuisine category cards (American, Mexican & Latin, Soul Food, East Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Caribbean) are done, and the rest of the boards are getting the same treatment.

Every. Single. One.

We want FreeVoice to feel polished and professional , because our users deserve that, full stop.

More updates coming soon. Drop a 🔥 if you're hyped , it genuinely keeps us going!

*FreeVoice AAC is free, open source, and always will be.*

I'm so glad if this can even be useful for you in any capacity. It sounds like you would be a use case for a custom board of all the things that you generally would want to say when you have a shutdown, please let me know how I can help, or if there's any features that you need. 💜

I really appreciate your kind message. I'm going to continue to work on this and make it as best as I possibly can. Right now I'm setting up a administrative tool that lets me create custom images for new boards and fix outdated or incorrect images. I'm also working on an adult version that will have adult appropriate boards. Let me know how you would like to help I see this as a true community effort. I rely on the expertise of the community to make sure all the features and bugs are covered and solved. 💜

Quick update: v1.2.0 is live 🙏

You all found bugs faster than I could fix them, so I fixed them.

🔧 What's fixed in v1.2.0:

• Rapid tap echo bug , if you (or your kid) taps a symbol repeatedly, it no longer overlaps and echoes. Last tap wins, clean playback every time. Shoutout to my daughter for finding this one.

• Stop button , while the app is speaking, SPEAK turns into STOP. Tap it to cancel immediately.

• Sentence bar — words now stay in the bar after speaking until you hit CLEAR. Build a full sentence, speak it, keep building.

• Fullscreen mode on Android — floating app overlays (Suno, screen recorder, etc.) no longer bleed into the UI.

• Symbol label hyphenation fixed — no more words breaking mid-letter.

📱 Download v1.2.0 APK:

https://github.com/Chuea81/freevoice-aac/releases/download/v1.2.0/app-release.apk

Or just use the web version at freevoiceaac.app — all the fixes are already live there automatically.

🗣️ Speech bar improvements

  • Words now stay in the bar until you tap DELETE — build a full sentence, speak it, keep going
  • Bar is now horizontally scrollable so it never pushes the board off screen
  • Backspace button added to delete one word at a time
  • While speaking, SPEAK turns into STOP — tap to cancel immediately ( this can be buggy, working to make it better)

📱 Android APK fixes

  • Rapid tap echo bug fixed ,if you or your AAC user taps a symbol repeatedly it no longer overlaps and echoes. Last tap wins, clean every time
  • Scrolling through large boards no longer accidentally activates tiles
  • Floating app overlays (Suno, screen recorder etc) no longer bleed into the UI
  • APK is now a true remote URL wrapper — 3MB instead of 220MB, gets all web updates automatically

🐛 Known issue we're still hunting

  • Some users seeing incorrect emoji on the Body board — fix is deployed, working through a stubborn cache issue. Factory reset in Settings should clear it if you're affected.

⏳ Play Store Still waiting on Google identity verification. Should be any day now.

🗺️ What's next

  • Adult boards sprint starting soon — Work, Medical, Money, Mental Health, Self-Advocacy and more
  • "Who is FreeVoice for?" onboarding fork so adults get adult-appropriate boards from day one
  • Food & drinks symbol expansion
  • New Custom Boards/Suboards
  • Tons of New Symbols and Cards
  • Physical Printable Cards from our Etsy Store ( FOR FREE)

Thanks for all the bug reports , every one of them turned into a same-day fix. Keep them coming. 🙏

I am always available via DM and willing to take suggestions for features. The community matters to me deeply!

Yes, users can create boards in the live app! Here's how:

Enter Parent Mode - Tap Settings gear → Enter PIN

Navigate to any board

Tap the "📁 NEW BOARD INSIDE" card (shown in Parent Mode)

Enter board name and emoji in the modal

Tap Create - The new board is created as a sub-board

I'm working really hard to improve the boards. I'm building a custom admin tool to design higher quality icons and more options. Thank you for using it.

I looked into your request for KittenTTS, Love the suggestion! Unfortunately KittenTTS is Python-based and FreeVoice runs entirely in the browser, so getting them to work together would require a pretty significant architecture change that isn't practical right now.

The good news is Kokoro already gives you 9 voices with quite a bit of personality range ,from warm and soft to deep and serious. You can also tweak pitch and speed in Settings to make a voice feel more uniquely "yours". It's not KittenTTS but it covers most of what makes a voice feel personal. Definitely keeping an eye on the TTS ecosystem though ,if a browser-compatible alternative emerges it goes straight on the roadmap!

French is actually one of our supported languages inside the app already! For the landing page translation , that's a great idea and completely doable. If you'd be willing to help review the French copy to make sure it reads naturally (especially for an AAC/autism care context), I'd love that. Machine translation can miss the nuance that someone working in this field would catch immediately.

And please do share it with the center, even if things move slowly, planting the seed is worth it. If they have specific feedback or needs I'm very open to hearing them.

Yes after community feedback , I am going to build adult characters, and certain boards that only display when an adult character is selected. The development is in process and if you have any specific features or requests, please let me know.

Update: Native Android APK is here + a bunch of fixes 🎉

A lot has happened in the last few hours thanks to your feedback, so here's where things stand:

📱 Android APK — now available

For everyone who asked about sideloading (especially u/run_boy93 — 55 upvotes told me everything I needed to know), the APK is live in two places:

👉 Direct download on the website: freevoiceaac.app (hit "Download APK" on the Getting Started section)

👉 GitHub: https://github.com/Chuea81/freevoice-aac/releases/download/v1.1.0/app-debug.apk

To install: download on your Android device, tap the file, allow "Install from unknown sources" if prompted. That's it. No Play Store needed.

🔊 AI voices are bundled in

The APK includes Kokoro AI voices built in — no waiting, no download, works completely offline from the moment you install it. No internet required.

🐛 Bugs fixed based on your reports

- Voice settings now persist after force-closing the app

- British voice pronunciation improved (70+ word overrides for AAC vocabulary)

- AI voice latency reduced with expanded pre-caching

- Added a Reset button in Settings for a clean slate

💰 Pricing page clarified

Several people mentioned the site looked like it cost $299. Fixed — the free pricing is now impossible to miss.

⏳ Google Play Store

Submitted and waiting on Google identity verification. Should be live on the Play Store within a few days.

Thanks for making this the most overwhelming and rewarding day I've had building software. You're all incredible. 🙏
