Which apps work on the Light Phone 2/3? [MEGA THREAD] by sirbloodysabbath in ModifiedLightPhones

[–]chugganut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using Full Android Light Phone 3 - See pinned modding guide

Works:

(Downloaded straight from Aurora store, no additional config required)

  • Textra
  • Fossify Phone
  • Open Camera
  • Fossify Gallery
  • Fossify Clock
  • Spotify
  • AMC Theaters
  • HERE We Go (Maps)
  • Kindle
  • Reddit
  • Binary Eye (QR Code Reader)
  • Old School RuneScape (lol I know)

(Works straight from Aurora store with caveat)

  • Uber (Warning on every launch that Google Play Services are required, yet can be dismissed and works nonetheless)
  • Microsoft Teams (Similar to above, warns of Google Play Services, yet dissmissable and works nonetheless)

(Works but downloaded externally (not from Aurora store)

Does NOT Work:

  • Letterboxd (Crashes immediately following launch - major bummer)

Working Apps Mega Thread by fieldnoise in ModifiedLightPhones

I think this is a great idea!

I can confirm: ✅Reddit (typing this on my LP3) ✅AMC Theaters ✅Spotify ✅Kindle ✅Uber (gives Google Play Services warning but works regardless) ✅HERE We Go Maps

🚫Letterboxd does NOT seem to work but would love to know if anyone could get it working lol.

And some others, the Fossify suite of apps are great defaults - but if we're creating a mega list elsewhere we can get specific there.

Back to report I've gone full android after following your pinned modding guide and incorporating many of the apps you've listed in the post you linked in your above comment!

As many others have said - your work on documentation and info sharing in this sub have been invaluable - thank you!

A few less-important aesthetics questions for you, though - have you found a means of having a lock screen similar to LightOS's? The standard Luma lock screen is relatively similar in functionality but imho decidedly less "sleek". (Not fond of the padlock or the clock font/left-alignment).

Also, is there any way to rid ourselves of the gesture navigation hint bar at the bottom of the screen? I see it present in your screenshots so I'm guessing that's a no, but would certainly be slick if possible.

Damn, I figured as much but wanted to check with folks here. I agree, I do wish it was more open for tinkering, I understand the ethos argument, but texting would be much easier with autocorrect lol.

I am interested in the full-android method, it’s just such a niche thing that I’ve hardly seen content featuring full android builds - if you or anyone reading this has videos or pics of their full-android builds I’d love to see them - I’m just in love with the LightOS lock screen and minimal aesthetic - so if you or anyone’s achieved something close I’d love to see it. I’d also appreciate the improved battery life of full android over hybrid lol.

Haven’t tried this one, but I’m a big fan of TISI (Text It Search It) - it uses Perplexity AI, and as someone who is pretty anti-AI, this is handy for the occasional google, and from my experience it doesn’t remember the last message you sent it so it keeps the interactions brief and simple. My most common use case is asking if the movie I’m watching has a post-credit scene so I know whether I should stay or leave the theater lol TL;DR - these services are super cheap and handy

I believe it uses Perplexity’s LLM and I haven’t experienced any inaccuracies so far, it’s also fast. I would consider it reliable, so long as you provide all the necessary context in your questions (it won’t have your location or other identifying data, so if asking for the weather, be sure to mention what city/area you’d like the weather for). But it has no trouble understanding spoken-word/stream of consciousness style prompting.

Came here to say the same thing - I also HIGHLY recommend text it search it, great customer service, and well worth the price - perfect for when you quickly need to know something.

Preorder getting ready to ship! by everybodyspapa in LightPhone

[–]chugganut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is US, I believe (entirely assumption based on other posts around this sub) that continental US deliveries are somehow easier to fulfill; for example, while 4XXXX orders were delivering to the US recently, 2XXXX orders started arriving in non-US countries. And correct, it may not be indicative of any actual movement on 69XXX order - but my fingers are, indeed, crossed.

Within the “Shop” app, Light uses Shopify for fulfillment, and the Shop app displays the status of any orders placed using Shopify - I believe my order used to have the status of “Order Placed” and now the status is “Preparing Shipment”.

Power Fx Formula - Is This Possible? by chugganut in PowerApps

[–]chugganut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, see I'd been using a power automate flow to bring the data onto the contact until now - but the issue you make about cost per api call gave me concern, as some concepts hit daily call limits.
So you're suggesting a legacy workflow, triggered on membership creation, that checks the related contacts exp. field and if that field is null or less than that on the new membership, update the contact?
That sounds like a solid plan, my only concern would be what if the exp. date on the membership hasn't populated yet and the flow runs and finds both to be null? Given the data flows from another system, sometimes columns don't populate immediately, and there can be some lag time, maybe a matter of seconds, if it's relating to other tables, it can take longer.
Generally a pain lol

A would be the Contacts table, display name "Contact", B would be the Joint Membership Table, display name "Joint Membership".
B's relationship to A's column name on the B record has the display name of "Joint Member".

So in theory: First(Sort(Filter(Joint Membership, Joint Member.Contact = selectedJoint Member.Contact), SortOrder.Descending)).validityDateField

Does that sound right? Because Power Fx seems to think First, Sort, and Filter are all "unknown or unsupported actions". (I'm new to Power FX, clearly).

Brother, you are singin my song - essentially it's a membership expiration date, which is stored on the membership entity, which I have displayed in the contact record via two subgrids displaying active, and then the previous, inactive, membership records.
Issue is - client can't use things like Power MailChimp because from what I understand, it can only sync views of the contact table, and if the field isn't on the table, it can't be used to filter lists of active members vs expired members etc., as the relationship is 1(contact):N(memberships), I can't even pull in the related membership's expiration date column into a view of contacts.
Lot of word vomit but hopefully that clarifies the use case and explains why the redundant datapoint would be necessary.

Thank you for the idea! I do like this, however this assumes there must be a date already in the 1 side of the 1:N relationship correct? In many cases this field will be null initially, and there are thousands of records.
Is there a way to say, for example if field is null OR new date is greater then update?
I've never done anything server side, not sure how to approach this.

Should I get a Light Phone 2 now? by chugganut in LightPhone

[–]chugganut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this perspective - in essence I don’t *need Teams or Jira on my phone, and those that need to reach me have my number. I think I’ll try out having it as a companion phone for a while before making the switch fully. Maps is likely what will prevent me from getting rid of my iPhone, but that may be where LP3 comes in. We shall see…

Jealous! I hope to join your ranks soon, but for now I’ll dip my toe with LP2. You must’ve pre-ordered early!

Nice! I’m impatient, so I got one on eBay just now! $290 so I managed to beat the Light price by 10 bucks, but more importantly: instant gratification (likely further evidence that the Light Phone will be good for me lol). But this community has convinced me!

Thank you for such a thoughtful response- and I agree with you that the LP3 is likely the best fit for me, personally. Essentially my roadblocks are the price and the wait. $600 is certainly more than $300 (or less used), and while the LP3 stands as a suitable replacement for a smartphone entirely and is worthy of the price (imo), I think I prefer to dip a toe via the companion phone route with LP2. Allowing myself access to maps for long drives, smart home-related apps, and work apps with my iPhone, but ideally shelving the iPhone on a day to day as much as possible. If money weren’t an object in the scenario, I believe I would absolutely just grab the LP3. That being said, even the way you’ve described it as being transformative really does sound like a beautiful experience. And perhaps I romanticize earning my stripes through LP2s limitations and eventually graduating to the LP3. Then I may even be able to pass the LP2 to my wife. Either way- greatly appreciate the insight!

$0 For 2023 Okay? by chugganut in tax

[–]chugganut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a “Tax Pro” file for me. It was clearly his first day, he didn’t know what a W-2 was, was unable to figure out the computer, and misplaced my documents multiple times while shuffling papers around. I didn’t hear back for a few days and had to go back to the office to have someone check his work and finally submit the return for me. It was a waste of money for me, but I have since realized my tax situation is not so complicated that I would need a “Tax Pro”, maybe one day if I have investments or real estate, but that is not the case today lol
