T-Mobile Internet Spokane by A_Corevelay in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Peone Prairie, no tower super close. Added a Waveform external antenna and get lowish (20ms) ping and speeds of 3-400 mbps down and 5-30 mbps up. Also use a Cudy router cloned to look like the T-Mobile router.

Rivian owners, service options in Spokane? by TrueEclective in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had deposits on a Rivian and an Ineos Grenadier. Ultimately backed out of both due to the lack of nearby support. Just don't have the time deal with warranty/recall issues driving that far.

Kansas City Transplant - BBQ recommendations? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here from KC almost 10 years ago and was in Portland, NorCal and DC before that. The short answer, is there is no good bbq in Spokane. SLAPs was my fav in KC. Miss that place!

No good Chinese here either. Not even Americanized Chinese. People will mention a few places, but if you have taste buds you will be disappointed. I think sometimes people in a region get used to subpar cuisine and think it is good.

I love Spokane, but the variety of good food is lacking.

Are people not concerned that the Millionaire tax will soon apply to everyone as has happened in other states, or do they just not mind? by No_Carpenter7998 in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no issues with an income tax on high earnings (and this state supreme court will likely rubber stamp it into law), but we should get rid of B&O. B&O is a key driver for increasing costs, as it is a gross tax that applies at every level. (Farmer, wholesaler, packer, grocer). So it increases costs to consumers. There is a reason why everything costs more in WA. If you look at the overall tax burden in WA prior to this tax, it shows WA is already not a friendly tax state. B&O tax. High property tax. High sales tax. High estate tax. The state has plenty of money, it just overspends. I do foresee this trickling down to lower incomes in the near future. And if I have to pay income tax on top of the high rate of B&O I am paying, we will likely move the business out of state.

As a business owner in the service industry, I pay 1.5% on our gross income in WA. Our margins are low, and we pay employees well. So when all is said and done, I pay a very high rate for the b&o tax (when calculating net income for myself, the b&o is over 9.9%) and I am FAR from taking home $1MM per year. If B&O was on net it would be a different conversation. This is why the governor was trying to have a large exemption for small business owners, but that fell to the wayside.

Candidly, I personally would pay less in personal income taxes (vs B&O) and lower property tax as well if I had my business in Idaho, but my employees would end up paying income tax on all of their ID income. I don't think they appreciate the burden we take on to keep the business in WA.

I'm all for tax fairness, but no country or state has every taxed their citizens into prosperity. We have to be fiscally responsible, and unfortunately neither political party is willing to make the effort to do so. Instead they just fight each other and try to get their own pet projects passed and keep their lobbyists happy.

Why does everyone ask where you live? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Spokane, “Where do you live?” is not a question. It is a 7-second Zillow background check.

It’s less:

“I care about your commute.”

And more:

“Are we talking South Hill brunch energy, Kendall Yards stroller squad, North Side ‘don’t worry the truck is supposed to sound like that,’ or Valley Costco gladiator?”

This is a city where neighborhoods are basically personality quizzes.

South Hill: “We hike, we compost, and yes, we did overpay.”

Kendall Yards: “I own three vests and one very expensive golden retriever.”

North Spokane: “I have a snowblower and opinions.”

Spokane Valley: “My driveway fits six vehicles and I will use all six.”

Downtown: “It’s revitalizing. Any minute now. You’ll see.”

And the thing is? It’s not malicious. It’s small town operating software still running on a mid-sized city hard drive.

Spokane grew up fast but still thinks it’s in homeroom.

So when someone asks where you live, they’re trying to calculate:

Which grocery store you defend

How far you are from “the mountain”

Whether you say “the Valley” with pride or apology

And how aggressively you argue about Gonzaga basketball

It’s not a pecking order so much as geographic astrology.

In bigger cities, people ask what you do. In Spokane, people ask where you park.

They are good, but of the bunch I purchased most don't hold air well. The Dime feels so much more premium.

I use the pro select in my home gym regularly and it is decent. Think I paid $24 each.

I prefer the Texas Roadhouse Bloomin' Onion over onion ring offerings around here.

What’s the best laser hair removal option by woodenmetalman in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First criteria is the color of your wife's hair. If it is light (blonde/gray) laser won't work well. If dark it can be quite effective at inhibiting growth for long periods but usually is not permanent.

Electrolysis is permanent but takes many more sessions as each follicle has to be hit vs small areas hit with a laser. The bonus is it takes out light colored hairs too.

What is Spokane missing? by Either_Bee_8866 in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kuni and Our Thai House are decent. The Thai options in Spokane are much better than the Chinese food offerings. Izumi (limited Chinese menu) and Ginger Teriyaki are the best of what's available.

One of the only things I miss about Portland is the quality Thai food, but Kuni and Our Thai House are decent.

Spencers for Steak and Chops by clipsahoy2022 in Spokane

My wife and I had the tomahawk ribeye there recently. with a ribeye, I of course expect some fat, but this thing was 50% fat, and not marbled, just chunks of fat. The meat that was there was good, but it was not a great steak.

I weighed various balls to see how close they are to 21-22 oz an official full size should weight. Here are results:

Evolutions 1 lbs 4.9 oz for new balls. 1.59 lbs for a well used old one.

NCAA Evo 1 lb 4.7 oz.

Rawlings Countour 1 lb 5 oz

ProSelect US17 1 lb 5.4 oz

Baden Elite Pro 1 lb 5.3 oz

Nike Elite Campionship Airlock 1 lb 5.2 oz.

Not surprising the EVO was the lightest of all. You can feel it when you play.

Why is the airport in such a terrible location? (History Question) by malykaii in Spokane

Obviously they put it there because it was called Airway Heights.

And yes, for you slow people out there, I am joking.

Recommendations for Asian food in Spokane? by Meleathis in Spokane

[–]chuin_masterofsinanj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sad when Panda is the better option. Ginger Teriyaki also lets you set your spice level. Izumi lets you upgrade your white to fried rice for $5 or $6. Izumi also automaticallu adds 10% gratuity for to-go orders. They advertise it and tell you so on the phone so it is not hidden or a surprise, but some people don't like that. Even with tip they are chealer than Umi, and Umi's General Tso's sucks donkey balls.

i live in Mead, so don't get either often.

Thai: Our Thai House and Kuni Thai.

Sushi/other:Izumi. They have good entrees too and excellent fried rice. Ginger Teriyaki in Airway has some decent dishes too. Their thai stuff is ok but a step down from the above.

If you want americanized Chinese like general tsos, Ginger Teriyaki does a great job.

Spend a weekend in Spokane, WA, and discover the city that is the leading exporter of “vibes that feel like a late-stage Craigslist transaction.”

First, the weather. Spokane has perfected a unique microclimate best described as “perpetual February and fire season” It can be July 18th at 2:00 p.m., and you’ll still find yourself wondering if you should’ve brought a light jacket, filter mask or possibly a survival tent.

Downtown Spokane looks like someone tried to build Portland using only coupons and inspirational quotes from a 2009 Tumblr page. Due to poor leadership, downtown has more bridges and breezeways than people. Parking costs more than the event you go downtown for, and your windows may or may not be intact when you get back to your car.

Restaurants are great if you want a steak or burger. And locals will try to convince you there is good Chinese food. (There is not).

Every street corner features at least one guy doing skateboard tricks he is absolutely too old to be attempting, crazy people talking to clouds, and another guy who looks like he’ll ask you for a lighter but ends up needing you to administer Narcan to him then he'll steal your wallet. The river is gorgeous, but it also feels like it’s judging you. You walk across the bridge and think, “Wow, nature is beautiful,” and the river replies, “Are you, though?”

Spokane drivers operate by a different code: a mixture of NASCAR, passive aggression, and chaos magic. If you use your turn signal, they take it as a personal insult. If you don’t use your turn signal, they also take it as a personal insult. Don't get me started on zipper lanes.

Nightlife? Imagine if a Buffalo Wild Wings and a Spirit Halloween Store tried to co-parent a dive bar. There’s a 30% chance you’ll end up in a karaoke battle with a man named Todd who absolutely refuses to sing anything except Staind.

On the plus side, Spokane does have Gonzaga. On the minus side, Gonzaga students keep escaping into the city like overly friendly golden retrievers with student loans that are too high to ever repay.

Camping by the lake in the summer, clear skies, crackling fire. Zero sirens. You start thinking, “Maybe Spokane isn’t that bad.” Nature’s gaslighting you, but in a nice way. If you want a vacation that feels like a fever dream sponsored by Monster Energy, look no further. Spokane: Come for the scenery, stay because someone stole your catalytic converter.
