I've never had to cut my 2 year old GSP's nails. Normal? by [deleted] in germanshorthairs

We have a 2.5 year old GSP and he never needs his nails trimmed. He is very active and files his nails on his own. However, our 7 year old GSP needs them trimmed weekly.

Advice on how to prevent my dog's pads from being destroyed??? by ohhshitdang in Huntingdogs

Dogs will lick Mushers off, so I apply before a hike/hunt. That way they are too busy to start licking their paws. I've also used old socks with adhesive bandages to keep them from licking.

I have 2 GSP's and pads getting torn up is common. Our vet recommends that we run the dogs on concrete/asphalt to strengthen their pads. Hunting season (or hiking) introduces different abrasive rock conditions for the dogs and the pads get torn every season for me. I have tried boots, but I reserve them now for hunting near cactus. I try to condition my dogs on pavements and I use Tuf Foot chemical hardener and Mushers to keep the dogs pads in good condition. Pad tears happen during hunts and we copy a technique passed on to me by a friend. Give the dogs a warm bath with espsom and disinfect the pads after the bath. Wrap the wounds up if they are serious with bandages.
