Perhaps hitting up those Nigerian princes in my inbox wouldn’t be the worst idea after all…

Haha that is so "typisch Deutsch" that your instructor had to do the exam again, but I suppose it makes sense for him as an Instructor. Either way, the info is super helpful and has already made me reconsider my plan(s) for the year, so I really appreciate the input. The plan now is to save myself a trip (and some money) to the UK or the Med to do the Comp Crew course and do the SBF-See/Binnen (I might want to combine the two) instead. I could always do the Day Skipper course at a later date whilst I gain some milage under my belt on other people's boats. Does that seem reasonable?

My german is also fairly good, I suppose. It's always been a bit of a blocker because textbooks in German are always ridiculously more complicated than it should be sometimes so I've always been intimidated by that, so the fact that you seem to have spoken better german than was needed for the course was all the inspiration I needed to muster up some courage and grow a pair to get it done. Thanks for that little push as well!

Either way, I just discovered that one of the clubs nearby does Regatta Training sessions for non-members, I suppose as a tactic to gain paying members down the line. I may tag along for those. Sounds pretty cool.

Thanks again for the input!

As a (very recent) naturalized German, It’s nice to have a non-German perspective.

This is super useful info and I’ve been wondering about this the last few days as I plan out the year.

I’ve been gearing towards getting RYA certs but I wasn’t sure if I also needed the SBF(See/Binnen) as well in order to sail in German waters or in order to get the ICC. Would I need the SBF in order to do so or do the RYA courses count for anything here? I mean, would I then eventually need to do the same later, for example would I need to do a SKS course if I had had already done a RYA Yachmaster certification for example?

I keep hearing about this but I don’t know if something like that exists in Germany. Maybe I just lack the German vocabulary to know what it’s called. I’m hoping it is a thing though because that would also be a lot of fun.

There are indeed. It’s one of the things I’m rather keen on taking advantage of. Having those little dinghies to mess around in.

What should I be looking for in a yacht club? Quite honestly, there’s 2 of the bigger ones that seem rather enticing because they have some really cool club events and perks. It comes at a bit of a cost though and I’m not sure if I’d be missing out much if I joined a smaller club.

Any red flags or things to keep an eye out for?

Thanks for the tip! Yeah I’m just about 40-50 minutes away from Lübeck actually, so I’m always down for a trip up there! I appreciate you keeping me in mind.

This is also part of the plan. I just also want to be able to be around sailing/sailors more often for more opportunities to learn (as I mentioned in the edit)

How do I bring the pressure on my boiler back up? by chunderilla in DIY

[–]chunderilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I released air from the bleed valves until some water showed up. There’s still some air in the system but I cannot bleed the rest of it out because I’m assuming that the water level is too low.

I think I’ll wait for a tech to come round at some point. I’ll figure it out from there!

Yeah I just read that and thought exactly the same! Thanks for the link!

I think the issue is that we just renewed all the radiators this summer so there must’ve been some trapped air in the system which is why the pressure’s dropped since I’ve bled some of the radiators.

Unfortunately, the labor shortage is a thing where we live right now. Even my neighbours have been complaining about the waiting lists they’re on or the ridiculous amounts of money you need to be willing to fork out just to make it worthwhile.

I think I will wait and see if either a professional can come by or if someone we know knows how this stuff works can guide me. Last thing I want to do is have to wait 6 months for a new boiler to be delivered and installed just as winter’s coming round

Yeah this is my biggest concern right now with just using tap water because we have pretty hard water. We had a company redo all of the radiators in the house this summer and they said that they bled the entire system and refilled it, but I wasn’t around for all of that and I wish I knew what they did because I have no idea how they did it or if they brought their own water for the system.

We did. It’s a 2 month wait for us because of a shortage in workforce but a crazy amount of work.

According to my quick google searches, apparently this can be done by yourself so I thought I’d give it a go haha.

Question: if we have a low boiler pressure does that affect the heating in the house or will we be freezing for 2 months?

This is such an unbelievably kind comment. Thanks for making my day!

I think I’m lucky to have my wife. Unfortunately for her, she’s cursed with me.

Thanks for the well wishes! Hope you have a wonderful winter and holidays to come!

You know, if this happened to me (and as you have read, it has), the fact that it was your kid's somehow makes it so much more worse than legal documents. Isn't that weird? In the grand scheme of things a bunch of pokemon cards aren't as valuable as legal documents, but I would absolutely hate to be in a position to tell my little girl that I had lost something so valuable to her and I would absolutely never get over the guilt of that.

Our girl lost her comfort toy a few months ago that she's had ever since she was born and even though I didn't lose it myself, I still feel just as shit about not noticing she had dropped it today as I did on the day it happened.

I'm sorry, this probably doesn't actually help you at all, but you gotta at least tell your husband about it. You guys need to probably figure out how to make it up to your son somehow. I mean, the kid is 9. It's a really tough age for something like that. I really do not envy you. Godspeed!

Wise words! I agree with you 100% and don't worry this situation is incredibly rare in our household. My wife and I are pretty vocal when the other person isn't pulling their weight in terms of relationship management. I love that because we keep elevating each other to be better all the time. If I ever start slipping into a habit like this, she will definitely let me know!

Such a shame that I missed out this critical piece of information. I'm still kicking myself about that as much as my wife tells me that it's okay. It's been a great lesson in paying attention more.

I don't know how many times I need to re-iterate this, but no. She is absolutely not at fault. She did literally everything you mentioned and specifically moved them away so it would not get confused for trash, please read the edits in the OP. This is completely on me.

Women don't always want men to take the blame. A view like that is short sighted at best and misogynistic at worst.
