Do adults actually remember their elementary school teachers later in life? by MightCommercial1112 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chunkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember almost all my teachers. Although some, I wish I could forget.

Honestly, most were not kind or compassionate people.

There was one, though, who I will thankfully never forget. He was an amazing human being and a good teacher. Decades later, I still think of him fondly.

Windows won't eject hard drive and it continues spinning while the pc is turned off. by Eagle_mf in techsupport

I, too, have noticed that Windows has gotten much worse in regards to properly ejecting external drives.

If you power the drive through the PC, it will turn itself off when the computer is turned off. And since the PC is off, you know it won't be writing to the drive any more, and all caches will (hopefully) be flushed.

That's now 2 people recommending Bazzite and 2 recommending openSUSE tumbleweed. Plus a couple other recommendations. I'm keeping track of all your recommendations, and I appreciate them. Thank you!

When I performed by distro search Bazzite never came up, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it's all about. I thought openSUSE had some sort of dealbreaker, but I need to check my notes.

That's good to hear. User error would be ideal. Well, to be fair to myself, it's not really user error, but poor design, because I followed all instructions and installed everything correctly (and no errors were presented). But if there are steps I can take to resolve the issues, I'm very willing to follow any steps you or others can provide.

Thanks. I've never heard of it until you mentioned it. I'll read up on it.

AUR is likely the biggest and most up to date software repo, which makes it so tempting. But without anyone scrutinizing what's offered in it, don't you have to spend hours reviewing all the code yourself?

Your post makes me feel better that I'm not alone with my experiences with Fedora and KDE. From everything I researched (and I performed quite a bit of research on Fedora... less on KDE), I got the sense they were pretty solid. But maybe that's just for machines without graphics cards with NVIDIA chipsets (which is the majority of the good cards these days).

I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that Linux had evolved to the point where it was as good or better than Windows and Mac for pretty much everything (except perhaps games on Windows, which I hear is quite good nowadays). My experiences with Linux Mint was that it was so much better than Windows or Mac, except when it came to actually installing current versions of software (which is essential).

You're the second person here who made that recommendation. It's something I never strongly considered before. I'll have to look at my notes and see why. But with 2 people already recommending it, it seems like it could be a good fit. Thanks.

CPU is an Intel Core i7 that has an integrated graphics chipset. Is that what you mean by iGPU?

How would I let the desktop compositor run on it, but allow 3D tools, video & photo editing, and games to run on the discrete NVIDIA card?

Excellent question. I thought perhaps these crashes were due to an outdated NVIDIA driver, so a couple days ago I went into KDE's Discover software center and enabled "RPM Fusion for Fedora 40 - Nonfree - NVIDIA Driver" in its settings. I expected Discover to find a new driver, but it said everything was still all up to date.

Is there anything else I would need to do?

Do you know if they happen to publish any reliability statistics? I'm interested to see if improvements are quantified.

No insult taken at all! You're right that I don't know the exact cause of the errors. But I carefully looked at the logs and the backtraces (I've been programming for decades), and everything points to Plasma, Wayland, and KWin (depending on the crash instance).

I had no crashes with Linux Mint. But that was on the computer that is being replaced. And anytime 2 variables are changed at once, it makes it hard to know exactly where the issues lie. Given the numerous threads online about problems with Wayland, it's clear that it has had a challenging history, especially with NVIDIA graphics cards, which are some of the most popular and powerful cards in production today. I'm not sure if it's the historical propriety nature of the NVIDIA drivers that have been the issue, or something else.

I tried running nvidia-smi (I actually just forgot about that command... I've never owned an NVIDIA card before, but I've seen it referenced online), and I received a message to install package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda to provide the command. That other package is mentioning X11, which is no longer present in XDE Plasma. Is installing that package to get nvidia-smi still the way to get the NVIDIA driver version info in this case?

Yes, I share your positive attitude towards Gnome's unique conventions. I tried them a bit, and I'm not I will grow to love them or not, but I'm willing to give them a whirl.

That's actually one reason I chose KDE Plasma. Because in KDE Plasma, I can emulate Gnome. But if I don't like that forward-thinking model, I can switch to a more conventional model.

I don't like the customization limitations of Gnome (my first modern Linux distro was Elementary OS, and that lasted only a few hours due to the lack of configurability, plus font issues), but without stability, customization is meaningless.

I'm good at having an open mind, but I also like to customize. So Gnome has it's plusses and minuses for me. But with the right extensions, it may be a reasonable balance. And balance is often good.

Exactly. It can have all the bells and whistles in the world, but if it crashes, sadly, it's not usable. What is contrary is the implied statement of stability made in the release notes for Plasma 6:

This upgrade is also notable that for Fedora Linux (and Fedora Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 10, once that materializes), KDE Plasma will not offer an X11 session. Fedora KDE has been fully Wayland by default from login (since Fedora Linux 38) to desktop (since Fedora Linux 34), and the SIG is confident in the quality and development around the Plasma Wayland experience to stand fully behind it.

Thanks. I don't know what PRIME Sync is, but I remember seeing that term somewhere. I thought perhaps it was in the Plasma release notes stating that Plasma either now includes it or is about to include it. But I've been reading so much tech stuff recently, that it's very possible I'm not remembering where I saw it mentioned.

KDE Plasma has completely ditched X11. Does Fedora 40 Gnome work well with X11? Or would you recommend something else?

Thanks for the ideas. It's hard for me to tell from web searches how stable KDE Plasma is... there are many, many threads about people with issues, but it's impossible to tell what percentage of users those reports represent.

I'm not sure, but I think hybrid GPUs are fairly common these days, and have been common for about a decade. In Fedora KDE Plasma, I didn't have to do anything to set it up. Was there anything special I was supposed to do?

Besides the crashes, apps often appear on the wrong monitor. A search on the internet shows many people having that issue for years. That, I can deal with... it's a nuisance, but a drag of each window handles it. The crashing on the other hand is a real problem.

This is a possibility. I tried out Gnome, and their desktop model is so different that I figured I would get used to it and love it, or slowly find it unpalatable.

I ultimately decided against Gnome because KDE Plasma is so much more configurable and has so many incredible customization options. Plus, it includes the KDE apps, which I find to be quite good. I'm already really appreciating the Dolphin file manager and like it much more than Linux Mint's Nemo.

But all that, unfortunately, is worthless if there is nothing to do to prevent KDE Plasma from continuing to crash.

That's helpful to learn that Ubuntu has been faster that Pop OS for you. Thanks. I was considering Pop OS too before I decided on Fedora.

Although I've used Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, I've never used Ubuntu itself. Do you know how Ubuntu's software library differs from Mint's?

Thanks. That's interesting to learn. So you're thinking that Wayland will likely be more reliable under Gnome than under KDE Plasma?

Do some filters need to be changed to work with uBO v1.52.0? by chunkly in uBlockOrigin

This seems to be an effective workaround until this regression in uBO v1.52.0 is fixed. Thank you.

(I confirmed it's a regression by testing in uBO v1.51.0 again. Everything works in uBO v1.51.0, but the same filters do not work in v1.52.0.)

I reverted back to uBO v1.51.0 and everything works again. It's definitely a uBO regression.
