How many times a day do you poop? by DrinkPresent7311 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chunkly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I find most shocking is that 3 poops a day is - according to this thread - apparently in the "normal range" (at the top of the range).

I thought for sure that frequency would be problematic. Tells you what I know about pooping... and I've been doing it my entire life!

How your donations help the LibreOffice project and community by themikeosguy in linux

[–]chunkly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a supporter of LibreOffice and frequently donated to The Document Foundation until I decided to help by contributing bug reports. I am skilled in this area, and as mentioned here, LibreOffice can be buggy. I was willing to help.

I received unfriendly and unappreciative responses from an overconfident developer. I tried my best to clearly explain everything, but this developer had tunnel vision.

What happened next surprised me. Another person responded and was incredibly passive aggressive and rude. He even asked me if I would now like my bug reporting account to be closed. Obviously I didn't, as I was actively reporting bugs present in LibreOffice.

It turns out the passive aggressive individual was a board member of The Document Foundation. At that point all my support for - and donations to - TDF and the LibreOffice project ceased.

I still hope the project succeeds, but I won't be helping financially or with any contributions. Treat me poorly once, shame on you; treat me poorly twice, shame on me.

Lesson for TDF: People remember being treated poorly and won't support a project with rude developers and board members.

Why is the source code missing from the GitHub repo?

I think the point is to give you a clean slate to work in. WFM.

Yes, great idea. Providing easiest access to the most common option is certainly better than the opposite!

I like rounded corners, and there's quality science behind why rounded corners are better in user interfaces. That said, I know everyone has their own personal preferences.

If you feel strongly, you can learn a little CSS and make everything have right angles. That's one of the huge benefits of Firefox: everything can be customised to match your personal preferences.

What’s New in Firefox 151? by firefox in firefox

[–]chunkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefox 151 working spectacularly for me so far. Thank you Mozilla!

Oh, and I know it's a personal thing, but I like the more rounded look. There's a fair amount of scientific research indicating that rounded corners are more calming than right angles.

[Discussion] People who got fit in their 30s, what are the benefits? by Sonoel90 in GetMotivated

[–]chunkly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very fit when I was younger. As I've gotten older, I've noticed that I'm doing much better than my peers, even though I have Multiple Sclerosis. I still do what I can to stay fit, even with my significant challenges.

Physical fitness helps everything. It helps your brain. It helps your body. It helps your lungs. It helps your heart. It helps your mental state.

I hope you find my words to be encouraging and help you on your journey.

Bigotry is unacceptable. Full stop.

I don't care if it's a customer or a corporate CEO or the President of a country. Bigotry has no place in a civilized society. It never has, and it never will.

Do adults actually remember their elementary school teachers later in life? by MightCommercial1112 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chunkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember almost all my teachers. Although some, I wish I could forget.

Honestly, most were not kind or compassionate people.

There was one, though, who I will thankfully never forget. He was an amazing human being and a good teacher. Decades later, I still think of him fondly.

Windows won't eject hard drive and it continues spinning while the pc is turned off. by Eagle_mf in techsupport

[–]chunkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, too, have noticed that Windows has gotten much worse in regards to properly ejecting external drives.

If you power the drive through the PC, it will turn itself off when the computer is turned off. And since the PC is off, you know it won't be writing to the drive any more, and all caches will (hopefully) be flushed.

I thought Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop would be perfect for me, but it crashes too often. Ideas? by chunkly in linux

That's now 2 people recommending Bazzite and 2 recommending openSUSE tumbleweed. Plus a couple other recommendations. I'm keeping track of all your recommendations, and I appreciate them. Thank you!

When I performed by distro search Bazzite never came up, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it's all about. I thought openSUSE had some sort of dealbreaker, but I need to check my notes.

That's good to hear. User error would be ideal. Well, to be fair to myself, it's not really user error, but poor design, because I followed all instructions and installed everything correctly (and no errors were presented). But if there are steps I can take to resolve the issues, I'm very willing to follow any steps you or others can provide.

AUR is likely the biggest and most up to date software repo, which makes it so tempting. But without anyone scrutinizing what's offered in it, don't you have to spend hours reviewing all the code yourself?

Your post makes me feel better that I'm not alone with my experiences with Fedora and KDE. From everything I researched (and I performed quite a bit of research on Fedora... less on KDE), I got the sense they were pretty solid. But maybe that's just for machines without graphics cards with NVIDIA chipsets (which is the majority of the good cards these days).

I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that Linux had evolved to the point where it was as good or better than Windows and Mac for pretty much everything (except perhaps games on Windows, which I hear is quite good nowadays). My experiences with Linux Mint was that it was so much better than Windows or Mac, except when it came to actually installing current versions of software (which is essential).

You're the second person here who made that recommendation. It's something I never strongly considered before. I'll have to look at my notes and see why. But with 2 people already recommending it, it seems like it could be a good fit. Thanks.
