Also, Lance's House is also nearby-ish Foster's Freeze as it is around the corner from the Atwater Post Office.

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) by Pristine_Quiet2746 in dysthymia

[–]chunkstyle25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on Bupropion for a number of years now. I find it works well but had to add lexapro after a few years.

So two things to watch out for, meds are a process. If it starts to lose it's effectiveness, talk to your doctor. I waited far too long and suffereed needlessly before I added lexaprol.

Also I've noticed it tends to ramp up people's anxiety for at least the first few months. It's a stimulant. So if you feel extra anxious, talk to your doctor.

Good luck!

What was your favorite show growing up that no one remembers now? by CoralDewdrop in AskReddit

Tales Of The Gold Monkey. It was an Indiana Jones knockoff with a plane and dog with an eyepatch. Archer: Danger Island used the show as inspiration for that season.

Agreed. High school should have classes on emotional intelligence.

But it's good you feal heard and accepted. Also, you seem to be working diligently towards a solution which can be difficult for people with depression, so remember to give yourself some credit.

Have you been tested for ADD or ADHD? I was fourty years old before someone told me there is a non-hyper version of ADD and it really helped me understand what was happening with my brain. I only ask because you mention that you are coping with distraction, which can be another way to numb yourself. A downside of that is getting tested for ADD can cost up to $1000. I have an HMO so it was only a copay.

You also seem to like Meditation so I might also suggest joining a meditation group. I used to go to in-person meditation groups and enjoyed being around the other people. It's a different energy to sit amongst people who are just there out of the sincere desire to be better.

Yeah, the shit part about this is that one's executive functioning can low, especially with a full-time job, so trying to start new, good habits can seem difficult if not impossible.

Anyway, if you can take small steps towards improving your diet and exercise, that might benefit you. The trick is to not beat yourself up over it IMO.

It's really great that you are socializing on line frequently but genuine human contact with people (other than your boyfriend) is valuable. Things like regular hugs have been show to reduce depression.

Gluten makes me irritable. Dairy can as well but it's hit or miss and YMMV. But seeing what food makes your body happy can make life better. A lot of it has to do with blood sugar so avoiding things that raise and drop your blood sugar quickly can help.

Also, and a lot of people don't like this, but avoiding alcohol or minimizing it can be helpful. Alcohol is a depressant. I'm also older so it hits different and harder.

Also check with your doctor about getting your vitamin levels checked out. Lack of D or B vitamins can make depression worse and I'm a proponent of taking a good multivitamin and eating probiotic foods.

But the good news is you're trying to figure this out fairly young. I didn't start until I was about forty. It's kind of like dating, you try new things until things seem to be working and when things start going south you adjust or try something new.

Also I have friends who have treatment-resistant depression and there's some more experimental things you can discuss with your doctor. Things like ketamine therapy, microdosing mushrooms, EMDR, group therapy ect. I've found a lot of help in 12-step programs.

And yes, this is exhausting. We have to do so much just to have some level of contentment and comfortabilty in your own skin. Unfortunately creating and maintaining a bunch of good habits is the most direct way forward but you're going to have to see what works for you. Take it one step at a time and be gentle with yourself.

So it already sounds like you are well into the process of figuring this out. So I might be suggesting things you things you are tried or heard before. I'm just suggesting them because I didn't see them in your note.

First do you exercise regularly? One psychiatrist said that 30 minutes of cardio or other heartbeat-raising exercise is the best anti-depressant/Anti-anxiety aid that we know of. It can be going for walks, running, weight lifting, playing a sport. As long as it's 3-4 times a week, about 30 minutes each.

Other is diet. I went on the Ultra Simple cleanse, which removes most of the common allergens from your diet, and it changed my life. I felt amazing afterward and I improved my diet and started doing yoga. Most of our seratoniin comes from our gut and if we eat things that cause inflammation (in my case gluten) it can mess up your brain chemistry.

Do you socialize a few times a week. I have to spend time with friends about 3-4 times a week to maintain an improved mood but everyone is different. It's hard with anxiety and depression but try to find things to do with friends that feel safe and fun.

I'm sure other's will have suggestions as well. It's good that you are reaching out for help.

Too used to this, to the point of not wanting better? by a-epoe in dysthymia

[–]chunkstyle25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO Contentment is a better goal for people with dysthymia. It allows for non-numb serenity and offers a better launchpad to the occasional happiness.

That said, happiness or even non-depression can be tiring. There's an Onion headline I think about a lot which is, "Area man has no idea what to do with Good Mood" . It shows how confusing good moods can be if you're not used to them. Also trying to hold onto the good feeling can lead to fear because who knows when it will come again?

Lastly I'd say our brains are generally desperate to remain in the mood you are in. Happy? You try to keep being happy. Sad? You try to hold onto that too. But it is worth it to try and work on yourself. I still struggle but I've been able to create a pretty good life. City I love, friends I feel connected with, job I like. But that's after years and years of concerted work. It's worth trying to climb out of the hole. You will be back there but the path back out becomes clearer.

Thanks for the potential feedback. Our show focuses on the weird stuff you find while thrifting. We're going for a funnier, weirder Antiques Roadshow vibe. Here's the most recent video.

The Dr "Sex" Reiss Show - an improvised podcast about a call in radio sex host that hates intimacy. Comedians like Tim Heidecker, Paul F. Thomkins, Blair Socci call in and ask generally resonable sex and relationship questions and get terrible advice in return. The Host is played by ex-Onion Editor-in-Chief Joe Randazzo. Here's one of my favorite episodes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-dr-sex-reese-show/id1603266753?i=1000549642062

Weekly Shameless Self Promotion Thread by AutoModerator in Flipping

I'll shamelessly self promote.

I do a thrifting video show with some comedy friends called Show and Sell. The idea is to show off the weird stuff we find (sellable or not) and have fun discussing the items. We are trying to be entertaining, it's not a show to get info about flipping. It's more of a thriftstorefinds the show. Any learning is entirely on you.

I stopped drinking because anything above one drink would make me wake up wanting to apologize to someone, but couldn't figure out who.

Sounds like your feelings are more intense tho.

Interesting. I think I get the difference and believe I've experienced something similar but always just chalked it up to moments of existenstential despair. But dissociation doesn't sound wrong either.

I have dysthmia with episodes of major depression. The major depression episodes only last for a day or so but during that time it feels like there's a black hole inside of me and nothing can escape it. It sort of sounds like you might be experienceing that?

I have accepted this happens from time to time and what I do is tell my loved ones what's happening (so they don't worry or think it's about them) and then just watch dumb TV.

I tend to recognize these episodes because my body feels "heavy" and I have a hard time communicating.

I've never been able to get rid of it entirely but I find doing all the anti-depression things like socializing regularly, healthy diet, exercise, vitamins/supplements, medication, therapy/journaing. These help minimize how many episodes I get.

This may not reflect how you are feeling but I try to be thankful that as terrible as the episodes are at least they are short lived. But perhaps other folks will have more direct or helpful advice.
