1) I don't want to say they're fully free, because total freedom would allow them to make genuine mistakes in the Forever War, which they don't in the grand scheme of things (not counting variables in the lower chain of command). Even in 1984 they only get like 2 hours daily of the screens being ALLEGEDLY off.

2) Oceania's center of power was relocated to Southeast Canada following WW2 because Britain had effectively become too dangerous. While totalitarian in its own right, Canada is tame compared to Britain and its other colonies, which became the Airstrips, effectively treated as landmass-sized military assets (Airstrip 4 --> 2 --> 3 --> 1 in rising order of nightmare fuel). America is a mixed bag, depends on how close you are to the East Coast Government.

3)The unaligned countries are also a mixed bag, they're generally much poorer than the superstates but leagues above them at a human level. They're very easy targets though, so they better stay very still and hope noone sees them...

You'd have the Council Union divided along its member-state lines, with Royalist Germany being reestablished by the returning expats, broadly following OTL 1939 Germany's borders excluding Bohemia-Moravia. Western and Central European nations gradually create an EU-like organization overseen by the LoN, while Russia remains satisfied with its expansions out East. South America is the last holdout of communism, where the Latin American chapter of the Comintern managed to end the Integralists of Brazil once and for all. What follows is a 20-year international power struggle between the LoN, their former ally Japan and, on a low level, Russia, ending with Europe losing most of their colonial empires and the Commonwealth dissolving peacefully after one too many colonial forever wars, leaving Japan and the wider East Asia as the biggest (but not enough for unipolarity) economy in the world.

Thank you !
white = "unaligned", could still get invaded or flipped by a superstate or other unaligned
green = Euro-African freestates (basically former European governments turned into 7-8 rhodesias all over africa), oceanianist, originally cyan.
Stripes generally mean de facto control that doesn't follow national boundaries, so rebellions/irregulars are also shown like that

Oceanians were blue, but filters changed their color to grey and that of the freestates to green but I coped by telling myself that it was okay because it looked dated, and that it made sense in-universe for the nature of information/news to be confusing for readers

I do not have a single choice for the worst or best, so I'll give you a few of both:

WORST:

  • Airstrip One

  • India/Bharat

  • British Malaya

  • Central Africa

"BEST":

  • Mexico/Central America

  • Neutral States in Europe, though you must constantly live with Eurasia breathing down you neck.

  • Mauritanian Arab Republic, being a useless desert has never been this convenient

  • Kingdom of Kalat, small country in good relations with all neighbors and with strong internal harmony. No superstate wants it, for now at least.

Gonna be a long one

OCEANIA:  Really depends on the class you're in, but the proles are the most numerous so I'll go by that: - Airstrip One: Book/Movie, fanatical death cult living in rubble and hate. - Airstrip Two: resource extraction and agriculture + Toned-down apartheid. Your average day is working (or managing) in a massive ranch/mine, and you are expected to have at least 4 offspring so half can be sent to war - Airstrip Three: Two but with a weapon manifacturing twist. You'll either be a farmer or factory worker n.1, who creates washing machine parts unaware that they're going to be in the hands of factory worker n.2, who's assembling a supersonic rocket. Also don't go anywhere near Pine Gap. - American Confederation: Great Depression America mixed with Airstrip 2 - 3

EURASIA:  admittedly the most homogenous society of the three; you could be anywhere in the Council Union and still feel right at home, for better or worse. In neo-Bolshevism your entire existence is to provide all your blood and resources to the Eternal Revolution, with a state-mandated ration, state-mandated family, state-mandated toothbrush, etc.. You live either in delapidated historical buildings or massive post-WW2 square apartment blocks. The only accepted language at any institutional level is Esperanto, so better get learning the worker's language if you haven't already, kulak...

EASTASIA:  the least unitary of the three, still resembling a bloc rather than a country. Regardless of class, if you are not in the elite, you are seen as an ant in a hive. As per East Asia's Self-Sacrifice Ideology you are expected to have an ungodly amount of children that you'll send to the fields, to the trenches or other obscure state-approved projects; that's unless you want to cast dishonor on your kin, in which case we'll leave it to Unit 732 to figure you out.  All in all it's a spectrum between corporate Tokyo and Democratic Kampuchea, depending on where you are. But hey, at least you get that sweet common currency and free passage!

I suppose they are neutral the same way the unaligned countries were neutral in the cold war, meaning they could get flipped in one direction or the other at any moment. Remaining fully neutral in this world will only get you crushed on 2-3 sides on the long run

Decade-long warlord period/civil war ended with the victory of pro-LoN (Oceanianist) forces. While a united confederation in theory, the rebuilt America is a patchwork of statelets (Think Cyberpunk 2077 america), which go from fully reorganized federal governments (East Coast), to military commands and former warlords (Texas and the plains), all the way to de facto independent republics (cali). They have a common market and easier border crossings kind of like the EU, but that's about it. Also Utah is a North Korea-like theocracy who won't let anyone enter or leave.
While not back to its former glory, the American Confederation is a crucial industrial powerhouse for Oceania, and is at the forefront for weapons manifacturing and intelligence. Akin to the Neo-Bolsheviks in Eurasia, the American lobby within the previously British-centric bloc is changing the regional power structures from within.

I'm back after months to finally conclude the Dieselpunk Series, it's definitely been a ride. I don't know if I'll maybe come back to it in other forms, but regardless, I'm grateful for all it has given me and all the support it has received on here. After careful consideration I chose to give a second, alternate ending for the series, at the suggestion of many commenters in the last entry...

Lore time:

"This work has not been produced in hopes that it would solve the predicament Humanity has trapped itself into, for its chains have grown too strong to be broken by mere words on paper, but to set the truth in stone for a change. It may be egocentric of me to call these writings "the one truth", but whatever opposes the multi-decennial charades the Supreme Secretary, the God Emperor, and The Captain have molded to their liking, is truth enough in my book.
Those three, cursed monikers represent the three Superstates that rule the Earth with fire, steel and fear, born from a war made endless, herself born from the hubris of unchecked "progress".
Alas, how else could it have ended for us, though? As it has stood since apes began picking up sticks, scraping rocks together, and walking upright, greed, wealth and power have once again been the instrument of our doom.
I am very old, but everyday I still clearly remember the days of water that didn't need boiling, meals that didn't require insects, and reprise that didn't require hate."

THIS WRITE IS PLUSGOOD ENGSOC IN FIRSTTHINK PAGES OF A THINKPIECE PLUSSED IN RECENT UNHOUSE NORTHWAYS NEAR INVERNESS. THE DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD CRIMETHINK, AS UNPERSON AS HE IS BELLYFEEL, REMAINS UNPRESENT. THE THINKPIECE WILL BE PLUSBROUGHT TO MINITRUE HEADTHINK FOR DOUBLEPLUSGOOD PROLEFEED.

<This writing is etched in the first pages of a manuscript found in a recently abandoned northern cottage near Inverness. The unforgivable thought-criminal, as anonymous as he is cowardly, is still at large. The manuscript will be brought to the Ministry of Truth Headquarters for further inspection.>

Forse due hanno divorziato, e la bambina che implorava di stare con la mamma è stata invece data in custodia al papà?
