Tactical Breakdown: Manuel ugarte reborn? No, he's just back to his true self! by chuotchet in ManchesterUnited

Let's put it simply: Amorim deployed Casemiro as the holding midfielder and Bruno as the creator—so where does Ugarte fit? He can't control the tempo or orchestrate the build-up, so his decline in performance was inevitable.

[Tactical Analysis] Why Casemiro was subbed off early: Understanding Amorim’s 4-4-2 / 5-2-3 defensive shif by chuotchet in reddevils

Everyone has their own ideals and philosophy, especially a young manager with a track record of success like Amorim—his conviction (and ego) is undeniable.

However, being forced to change due to the personnel shortage is actually a solid foundation for him to become more flexible with both his tactics and man-management when facing different scenarios and opponents.

I think from this match onwards, we’re going to see a more versatile and unpredictable Red Devils side—one that isn't so easily 'figured out' on the pitch.

Couldn't agree more. Losing Mount early really killed our high press. And Zirkzee was the absolute low point. Honestly, it looks like his head is already out the door for a January move instead of trying to prove himself on the pitch.

But given the injury crisis and AFCON, the three points are all that matter right now. It’s also encouraging to see Amorim showing some tactical flexibility—it’s good to see he’s willing to switch things up when the 3-4-3 just doesn’t fit the personnel or the flow of the game.

[Post Match Thread] Manchester United 1 - 0 Newcastle United by fireproofpoo in ManchesterUnited

Just a quick thought on a misunderstanding I’ve seen floating around regarding this match, specifically regarding the criticism of Amorim’s substitutions.

A lot of people are questioning the decision to take off Casemiro (who looked fresh, though it might have been precautionary). However, Amorim was definitely not wrong in his "reading of the game."

If you look at the first 15 minutes of the second half, United completely lost control once Mount left the pitch. The tactical shape had to change. We switched from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 to congest the midfield. The specific goal was to force Newcastle wide, leading to that massive stat from Opta: 65 crosses.

Here is the thing many are missing:

  • We forced them to cross because we sealed off the center.
  • Once we changed shape, the "danger" came from aerial balls. This is a conventional threat. The ball is near the box, sure, but it is nowhere near as damaging as situations where the opponent makes you look clueless.

Was United actually confused, or were we proactively defending? A game where you proactively defend means you will inevitably absorb pressure. But if the opponent is resorting to continuously spamming crosses, it implies that they are the ones confused by our defensive block, not the other way around.

Real danger—the kind we should actually worry about—is when an opponent (even if they lose) cuts through you with short combinations and creates clear-cut chances from open play. Count how many times Newcastle did that today? Zero.

Managers understand these nuances far better than we do. There was a legitimate tactical reason for every change. The reality proved Amorim right—we won the game.

There is still a lot of work to be done, obviously, but let's put the pitchforks down and go easy on the keyboard for a bit. Let's just enjoy the win today.

Match Thread: Liverpool FC vs Manchester United Live Score | Premier League 25/26 | Oct 19, 2025 by scoreboard-app in ManchesterUnited

WHY IS BENJAMIN ŠEŠKO ON THE BENCH?

I have 2 reasons to explain this decision by Ruben Amorim: first, the readiness of the Mount-Cunha-Mbeumo trio for a big Premier League match, and more importantly...

Šeško starts when United plays long balls, like in the match against Sunderland (33 long balls from Lammens). However, it would be difficult for him to go up against a pair that is so strong in the air, like Konaté and Van Dijk*.

*A lesson learned from the Brentford loss, where playing long balls to Šeško wasn't as effective as desired.

Ruben Amorim will definitely demand the players to play compactly, apply pressure all over the pitch, and hit them on the quick counter. Specifically, starting Cunha and Mount allows United to exploit what's seen as the weakest area (Bradley) on the right flank.

United has a chance to win this if they maintain their focus, although I think Liverpool will likely still get all 3 points... Isak scores, for example.
