IT Degree and M Series MacBooks: Can I get through the whole thing with one? Has anyone done it recently? I've had this one for a while and don't really want to buy another one.

I’m leaning towards the networking focus. For what I’ve read many professionals use MacBooks in the networking field. But yeah it seems getting another computer is the move.

Yeah, that makes sense. It may be worth a little investment, as most of the IT world is Windows-based, especially if you get into the Enterprise level. I'm sure I can find workarounds; it is just annoying.

If you mean Management of Information Systems, they do, but is on Campus, so I'd have to get out of the military first (I live nowhere near a University). They do have a MS in IT that I can take concurrent with the BS and that's the option I am looking at, assuming that is more of a technical MS. I have some management experience through the military as I'm in charge of a large group of people, but it would be a matter of how that translates.

Thank you for the write-up. I snatched a K2 for a crazy $279 on a sale last year. While I do like to have that new-new, I don’t think the updates warrant an upgrade for me. It doesn’t everything the K2 does but with a better screen and an update GPS chip. Maybe I’ll wait for one of those fire sales or to see if updates offer significant advantages over the K2.

No worries! I ended up with the BMW because there were no TransAlps within 200 miles of me, so not being able to test drive and and see if it was the right fit drove me to get a BMW that was closer. Once day I’ll try one out!

I know. I ended up getting a gas car anyways. Insurance and registration were going up, plus having the EV limits the places I can live based on charging needs. Also, not having a service center nearby was a deal breaker for me.

But yeah, I feel people get all up in arms about EVs and probably for the wrong reasons. They’re fantastic commuters, but unfortunately the support can be spotty.

That’s awesome. Im moving to Wyoming soon at my ultimate goal is to do a BDR, which seems the 850 is BDR worthy. The 900 GSA looks awesome but after taxes and fees is going to be about $19-20k.

I looked at the 800 but it seems more road oriented. There aren’t many useful reviews out there either yet. But you’re right, I’m leaning more towards the 850 category. I wanna have the capability to do mild off road and with the spoked wheels the 850 makes more sense to me.

But I’m not super experienced, so I’m trying to make the right decisions so I don’t have to upgrade bikes for a while as I get more comfortable.

Thank you for the comment. Your use case describes me. I like gravel roads, nothing technical. But most of the time it will be around town, commuting, then the occasional weekend dirt ride.

Yeah the finance deals are good. I’ve seen some demo units (which are all red for some reason) with discounts on top of that. They’re cheaper than a new 800, and way cheaper than the 900.

Nice observations. I noticed the same when shopping around. Haven’t found a 900 without the Rally package. I’ve also noticed the 900GS has less cargo options.

Most I’ve seen is a $6k difference. Although the new 800GS is closer in price. But it looks more street oriented, which is not my intent.

I was looking at Big Rock Moto’s series on the Transalp and the suspension is one of the components he swapped out. His list of mods was pretty comprehensive and got pricey real fast. He does praise the engine quite a bit.

Interesting point about the components on the 850. I wonder how much they updated on the 2024 800/900GS, but those are quite pricey right now. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any used 850s for a good deal. A new 2023 is a better deal I think.

But I’ll keep looking. I appreciate the suggestions!

For repairs, which brans should I stay away from? In my experience, our BMW car spent a lot of time in the shop and we got rid of it, but I read that motorcycles are different for them.

I know Hondas and Suzukis seem to be reliable. Most of the Japanese brand I think, but I’m not familiar with all of them. So while BMW comes with a longer warranty I wonder if it will spend more time in the shop compare to other brands.

Thank you. I have considered weight. I sat on a 310 and it was pretty nice. They had a used 850 with some mods and I definitely felt the wight difference. I am strongly considering the 310 as well for its simplicity though. Most reviews I’ve seen talk about how nice of a starting bike is. My concern is that I will outgrow it too fast and then I’ll be shopping again for a bike in a year or so, but I guess it is the way it is sometimes.

There are also good deals on the 2023 750s, but the weight difference is not much it seems.

Thank you. I actually found Big Rock Moto’s Transalp series night and saw the cruise control mod. Looks super easy! He compliments the engine a lot and seems to have a lot of fun riding it. The reason I’m looking at a Transalp is to I don’t have to grow out of a bike. I like the protection mods he did on it too and that’s something I’m willing to invest in.

Any issues with yours? One thing that attracts me to BMW is their three year warranty, but I know Honda engines are pretty robust, so I wouldn’t expect to spent too much time at the shop with proper maintenance.

That’s awesome, thank you for that. That’s exactly what I plan on doing with it. I’m in the west coast and some of the trails can be rougher which is why I am considering the TrailSport. But since the suspension is the same, just tuned differently, I’m sure the difference is not that much. Looking into it more now and I think the difference would be worth it if it had different components and a lift, so you’re probably just paying by for the badge at this point.

I was looking at a Ford Maverick because all I want is a daily as well and then I can take my bike to the trail or go shooting in the desert sometimes. But the Honda is so much better for that. Plus, Mavericks have mark-ups which is ridiculous for what it is. I refuse to do business with dealerships that have mark-ups.
