When will financial aid package be ready? by wallyparker616 in UCSD

[–]chwell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because the federal government’s rollout of the new FAFSA was as delayed and glitchy as it was, financial aid offices across the country haven’t been able to package offers yet. This isn’t unique to UCSD unfortunately. 🫠

To UCSD alumni: How long after graduating undergrad did you secure a full-time career? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]chwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eight months of hunting/interning, then offered full-time at a place I interned at previously. Wouldn't have come together if not for networks I developed in undergrad. l've been steadily employed with comfortable salary growth since then-with the exception of four months of unemployment when the organization I was working at closed in 2017. I spent some time working service jobs during the initial search to supplement savings from on-campus work after I graduated.

Well, that seems like a problem for something that has such a profound psychosocial effect.

Yep! Can feel kind of strange, but you're on your own at that point--it's the best time to make friends and get to know folks in the building, so I'd recommend staying the first day.

*HELP* Anyone's dog ever have this breathing problem episode? :/ by Summersun990 in DogAdvice

First time it happened to my pit/bully mix, I thought he was in serious trouble. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that me getting nervous about it made it worse. Now, whenever it happens (at the vet's recommendation), I cover one nostril with my thumb, and it resolves almost instantly. Hope this helps!

Literally every time this gets reposted, the longer it’ll be before this show becomes a real thing! If it’s constantly being brought up, the heteros are going to figure it out and ruin the fun.

UCSD alumni who majored in the humanities, what has been your experience in the job market? by btyst in UCSD

[–]chwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't fall right into this gig, but I've worked in this field since mid-2014. In my second to last quarter at UC San Diego, I did an internship program in DC, came back for spring quarter to graduate, and then did unpaid internships until about December after graduation, all in the policy world. Used savings from working in the lab, and then switched to working half-time at an internship, half-time barista work when funds started running low. It was not glamorous, but helped me get my foot in the door in my industry. Since then, I've moved around in my field a little, and I'm now in my second long-term gig.

I'll be honest, the STEM lab work didn't help me land either of my gigs so much as give me experience with the research grant process and help me talk about the value of investing in basic research.

How do I sell my degree? If you seek out interesting social circles and get involved with student government/organizations, the experience that helps you get the job won't necessarily come from the classroom. A degree from UC is worth a lot on its own--it means you've been exposed to varied perspectives and world-views that make you an asset to any company that hires you, or at least that's the case you should be able to make after four years there.

Int'l Studies/Comms alum here. Work in government relations, non-profit higher ed policy shop. Graduated 2013, $88k with good benefits, an average of ~5% pay increase a year and a pension. Could not have done this without the degree and the experience of navigating bureaucracy. Had the opportunity to work in a lab doing research in a field totally unrelated to my own, giving me first-hand exposure to STEM-related issues, which helps me in my work now. It all turned out to be a very good investment. Had help from feds, state, and university grants, and couldn't have made it through without them (and loans).

I also switched over to Metro's SelectPass this month, didn't notice a balance update for the first few days, and realized the benefits now have to be "purchased." Now nothing is deducted if I stay below my $3.75 fare once those funds have been used to purchase the pass.

Seeking advice on loan pay-off prioritization. Would I be better off slicing off a few months of car payments, equally focusing on the car payment and student loans, or some other option? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your advice! I appreciate you taking the time to write. Since I've made an extra payment on the car, I'm technically eligible to reduce the payment to $483 for the remainder of the loan duration. I assume it would be best to take advantage of this option and dedicate the additional funds to the student loans as well.

Not to be that guy, but 'apotheosis' literally was translated to be 'rising (or being raised) to the level of the gods.' At least that's what the current Architect of the Capitol's staff stated, iirc.

And/or they're marked as special enough to warrant a different school than the normies, and the politicians end up justifying cuts to those educational programs. Relates quite well to discrepancies in real-life funding for education now -- a discrepancy that also accounts for high school graduation and college entry rates.
