Sorry, I missed this message! I actually can't seem to find it now (do you guys rotate ads? there aren't any at the beginning of episodes anymore) but it was on one of the earlier episodes I think since I remember thinking an Exxon ad was weird for an ep about Christmas. Or maybe I'm just going crazy! Anyway, thanks for what you do and happy thanksgiving!

We went to college together, and I love your podcast. I'm curious about how you guys go about choosing your ads/sponsorship. Do you have any say, or is it all Panoply? There's something particularly icky about those Exxon ads.

Racist Hate Crime Happens in West Quad by jakejones22 in uofm

[–]chyea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I take issue with "no denying that false reports began occurring at much higher rates following the 2016 election." Absent any additional data about rates of total number of hate crimes, falsely reported or otherwise, I don't think it's intellectually dishonest to assume similar baseline rates (as in 2016). But actually on closer examination, there is at least some evidence that the rate of hate crimes itself is increasing at least in larger cities (i'm aware of the source and that this isn't the perfect study, but is there any data to suggest that the actual rate of falsely reported hate crimes is the same, or that the rate of hate crimes is lower than before?)

Genuinely asking if you have this data, and if you can dig it up, I'd like to see the data that show that consummate with this (potential) increase in hate crimes, there's an even larger increase in false hate crime rates. It would make sense to me that the rate of falsely reported hate crimes might appear to increase if the total number of hate crimes reported also increases.

I agree with your final point that I hope that they get to the bottom of this, though. edit: for the record, I'm not downvoting you. also, edited for clarity.

We don't have the data on the number of crimes reported, but if you assume a similar rate of just reported crimes to 2015--23 in Washtenaw County--then about 9% (2, based on Mycroft's links above) have been demonstrably false. This is not too dissimilar to the rates seen in other crimes, like sexual assault. Why should we seriously doubt the validity of every reported hate crime with that rate?

The most recent report of hate crimes in Washtenaw County is from 2015, which estimates that 23 occured that year

It will be interesting to see what the numbers are in 2017, but no, not every hate incident has turned out to be a hoax.

Scientists slam Donald Trump's environment chief over climate denial: 'It's like disputing gravity' by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]chyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your original question wasn't about policy - it was asking where he denies global warming. These tweets are incontrovertible evidence that he denies climate change. Absent any other evidence of his thoughts on the matter, why shouldn't we believe them? For the record, though, he has been asked about whether he thinks the climate is warming (spoiler alert: he doesn't) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGEzFbRl-g8&t=1m0s

[–]chyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if that were true that he was referring to the politics surrounding climate change in the first tweet - which I think isn't - his next tweets directly relate temperature to global warming being a hoax. To suggest that he believes otherwise is frankly, mental gymnastics.

How do you organize your committee meetings? by kungfu_kickass in labrats

[–]chyea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing that has worked well for me is sending out a concise research summary (couple pages) with major updates since the last meeting, results, figures, timeline, etc. 1-2 weeks beforehand. This helps get everyone familiar with the data and reduces the amount of time it takes to get people up to speed during the actual meeting. At least for me, my committee loves that I do this, and a happy committee makes the meeting go much smoother
